How do you keep critters out of the garden?

I'm so amazed at some of you who have such a large assortment of veggies with such high production! Even those of you who have a small property, you make the most of it! I'm so jealous!

But how do you manage with the critters who want a piece of the pie too? I grew about 7 or 8 wonderful tomatoe plants this past spring with huge success.....UNTIL the rats discovered they liked tomatos too.

We put traps out and caught a few, but the truth is, I'd rather not grow veggies if it means I have those nasty things running around!

What do you do to deal with the animals (squirrels, rats, opossums, racoons) in your garden? Tomato season is starting again (start seeds) and I really want more of some REAL tomatos, but LOATH the thought of rodents thinking our yard is a free buffet, not to mention it really p*sses me off to go out in the morning to pick those "just ripe" tomatos to find out they've been gnawed on!
