Living room decor and empty space under wall opening

Hi Again! we just moved in and i love my large couch but i dont really know how to lay out this room with such a large couch! I really want to find something to make it work. I’m also contemplating a new tv stand and some type of furniture under the opening. Any ideas? This is such an awkward room for a living room. Thank you!

Have you tried the tv on the opposite wall and your sectional moved to the wall where the tv is now? You’ll have more room.

If i move it that way, the walk way will be in between the sectional and the tv sicne that is the front door. I was hoping to have somewhat of an entryway.

Accent lighting appears to be missing; your idea of a floor lamp at end of sofa is good. I think an arc lamp would be a bit overpowering--there are plenty of other transitional options--and lots of suggestions from houzzers if you ask. I would also place a small drink table in this space and lose the basket. Other suggestions: Move the mirror---it is distracting and not working as others have noted. Perhaps in your entry? Scoot your sectional further away from the wall---it appears there is sufficient open floor space. Open space is good and will help your room breathe and appear larger. Panel drapes behind sofa and new drapes of the same on your slider would be my next move. Mount them outside of framing (so inside edge is at the framing) and much higher--almost to the ceiling--- creates illusion of more space in your room. Consider art for between these windows once panels up. Looks comfy--enjoy good times and memories in your home.

A safe bet for seating is a 3-seat sofa and two upholstered armchairs. Chairs can be swivels if they need to turn to TV for watching. Don't corner any furniture; it just eats up floor space and makes it look like you don't have room for your stuff when you actually do. Looks like your lighting needs upgrading from builder's basic to beautiful.

it is a little awkward with the 2 flooring. I think I would look for something that is taller ( just below the light switch) but narrow so that it can be totally on the carpet but right up to the hardwood with art above

Great space with so much potential! Suggest searching modern on line rooms and any specific items you are considering. Save everything you like, as a plan will make it easier (for both short and long term additions) and take your time. Some ideas: Wall next to stairs - keep it simple; off set opening with height/volume and leave wall empty. Large vertical art on left of windows (will draw the eye away from toys as well) and on right, add a floor lamp and chair (as per Beverly’s suggestion). Fill the gap on left of fireplace, creating a more impactful feature wall. Ideas: large art (and you can mix metals). Shelving Could paint black as well. Accessorize below TV Save/keep coffee table ideas, so you are ready when the time comes.

I think a couch that has less depth would work wonders in this space.

You have a very narrow field to work with, albeit still doable. It might help to mount the TV, otherwise get a thinner console.

Sectionals are usually unnecessary but if you plan to keep something similar, a sectional like this would work well.

It has less bulk than your current couch and the sleek lines help to divide the room from the entrance.

That couch is way too big for that space. I'd cover up that opening with drywall and put the tv over there. Then break the sectional up so that you can practically configure your living room layout.

Where’s your dining room and how does it look? An you swap the two rooms and use this room as a formal living room with two chairs and a loveseat with the dining table. And then the sofa in the current DR?

I like the idea you are attempting but I don't think you have the proper footage you need to pull it off. I think I would hang the TV on the opposite wall, then maybe use the credenza on the blank under the opening. The 'hall' is dedicating too much square footage to walking.
