2nd Home, Completely different style
Comments (3)I agree embrace the difference and have some fun.Sorry I never think sectionals are a good choice for seating and that DR looks stuffy and not particularily contemporary. Think about a sofa and 2 chairs instead and a cool live edge dining table or something with a thick glass top .Start an idea book of comtemporary spaces and see what makes you smile. Comtemporay does not need to be cold and can be aquite aliberating experience when you are used to traditional....See MoreAdding 2nd story to ranch home-- design ideas
Comments (22)The Cook's Kitchen: I just re-read your comment. Yes, we would put our kiddos upstairs and convert their rooms into an apartment with a separate entrance. There is already a bathroom that just needs to be converted. We definitely want to make this long-term friendly for him, expecting a wheel chair down the road. We will look into the selling both homes idea... I see that as being more complicated, honestly, since buying a larger home would be contingent on the sale of 2 homes.... There are currently only 6 homes (that meet price and size) for sale in our desired area......See More2nd fridge or 2nd cooktop?
Comments (8)Is your fridge or your freezer the problem? If it's the fridge, then get a large all-fridge for the kitchen and move overflow fridge and freezer to the garage. If the freezer is the problem, put an all-freezer into the garage. All-fridge and all-freezer is more expensive, but ends up using space much more efficiently. One way to mitigate the cost is to buy a commercial model. They tend to give you a lot better bang for the buck. Unfortunately, they also tend to be more noisy. So, that's probably only an option for the garage. We have a "True" fridge in the garage and really like it. If you need more than 4 burners (30" range or rangetop) or 6 burners (36" model), you should review your cooking style. Even restaurants often make do with that. The trick is to use your oven(s) much more extensively. They are a great tool whenever you need to cook things for a long amount of time. In other words, I wouldn't double up the stove or the fridge, but I certainly would get additional ovens if that fits the budget and available space....See MoreRemove 2nd story of house that was originally single-story?
Comments (11)Essentially until you and two or three contractors walk the house, you don’t know what is involved. Most of us are trying to tell you cost is local. Forty miles from my house to the next city is a different world of cost. The most important comment, one that carries the most weight as far as I am concerned, is Seabornman’s. Only an in-depth, in person assessment of everything that has to be done to make it perfect for you. Do stairs have to move? Is there a massive stone fireplace in the middle of the space you want to have a new kitchen? Is the former living room now a giant master bath? We don’t know until you take possession what you want done so we can’t even guess what it would cost. We’re not mean, but most of us have built and or remodeled several times and we are realistic. Please don’t be angry-you are asking an open ended question. Can it be done? Yes. Should it be done? It will depend on the actual cost at the time you can bid the project and if you decide it will be worth the money to you. Oh dear! I just reread and noticed “ the amazing lot”. The cretins who bought one of our former houses destroyed the beautiful patio, plowed down the strawberries and the asparagus bed, cut down the flowering tree outside the breakfast room-for starters. The husband of one of my neighbors was afraid of snakes so he had every tree removed from their half acre wooded lot....See MoreJoy R
