I didn't really have a lot of choice for places that are not in full sun 10-12 hours a day and ended up putting the container in an area that is shaded in the morning and early afternoon with direct sun in the late afternoon. It's not ideal but after seeing what our recent 4 day heat wave did to my existing cucumbers, and seeing my experience poor wilted plants through almost all of last September, I think I need to try something different this year.

I d on't know of any purple leaf wax begonias - maybe bronze leaf. In the south you don't want to plant wax begonias in full sun - lots of folks do, but they eventually look like crap. Maybe in the north they can be planted in full sun without a lot of fanfare. Maybe if they kept them watered every other day then they would look good but most look like they need to be yanked out and replaced with something else by mid June.

Hi Lisa! I have Tiger Lilies (that my neighbor also gave me a few years ago) along the east side of the house. The area probably gets even less sun than yours because of nearby shrubs. They seem to do fine out there. I don't think these lilies are very fussy. Have you ever noticed those little black 'beads' on the leaf right by the stem? Those are miniature bulbs. If you plant those in the ground they will sprout. I have a few popping up around the base of the parent plant. Very cool! PS. I have also read that Tiger Lilies should not be planted next to other lilies becasue they carry a virus that can mutate other lilies. I planted mine in an isolated spot. CMK

All yews are extremely shade tolerant and will grow in almost total shade. However, that is not their preference. Growth will be slow and and the plant may become leggy with sparse foliage. And you may find the plants leaning towards a stronger light source. I recall a planting of Hicks at an older private garden that were shielded from all but the early morning sun by a tall fence and larger adjacent conifers. They were massive and well-developed but had a marked lean to the early eastern sun.
