Comments (37)While this isn't gardening, when I was 16 I worked for a summer in a corner grocery that also sold ice cream, mini pizzas, hot dogs, etc. The girl who used to work there spent all summer painting a beautiful mural on the outside wall. She finally got done. It was beautiful. Everyone was very proud and happy. The next morning, we came to work and found red paint splashed all over it. We didn't even get to display the finished piece for a full day. The girl was heartbroken and understandably didn't feel like starting over again. They just painted the wall white. I've never understood why people do that. I also read in another thread somewhere someone who had expensive prize irises, daylilies, etc. They came home early one day to find someone else's car parked in their driveway. An entire family, kids, too, were in her backyard digging up her flowers. They had shovels, pails, everything. This was a planned expedition. When they were discovered, they simply took all of their stolen flowers, got in their car, and drove off. On a slightly related note, I have a beautiful copper hanging that I wanted to put out, but it's still in its box. I don't know if it would last a day before disappearing....See Morethieving granny
Comments (47)Once again I would like to thank everyone for their support. Since my last post in July, they found that my grandma had a inoperable tumor in her stomach, she continued to be unable to eat more than a few bites at a time. We took her home and were able to keep here there, thanks to all the wonderful friends and family who helped and a great doctor, who allowed us to keep her home and gave her everything she needed to be comfortable. She passed away at 4:30 saturday morning, my mother, my daughter and myself were at her bedside, she died peacefully in her sleep. We buried her yesterday, it was warm, sunny and she was surrounded by many beautiful flowers (I'm sure you're wondering, no, none of them were from his shop) Thank you all again for all your emails and prayers Sheila...See Moreapple thieves--what to do?
Comments (28)Just weighing in on the cat issue--my cat has had access to the outdoors now for 5 years and he kills at least one rodent (gopher, mouse, or rat)every day (which I find evidence of, believe me!) however in all that time I have only found evidence of one bird kill--the long feathers of a pidgeon. I realize that domestic cats are considered the biggest killers of songbirds, however, not my cat. It seems, based on a small bit of google research, that each cat tends to have his/her own "specialty" prey; some like birds, some like rodents, some even get into fishing if they have access. Now and then a cat will be a jack of all trades and kill some of each. I guess what I am saying is that if you have a rodent specialist, that's desirable and you won't have to worry so much about the songbirds. However, I know of no way to tell until your cat actually gets out there and starts to hunt, what his specialty will be. If my cat had turned out to be a songbird killer I would have kept him indoors. Regardless--I also have to agree with the above poster that said that it is rare for a cat to go after squirrels. You'll have to either trap or poison them I'm afraid....See Moreabsolutely swinish thieving birds - considering avicide
Comments (12)Oh, Campanula, you have my sincere sympathy. What an awful thing to see in your garden! So sad. Gardening has given me some understanding and empathy for the poor farmers and the plagues and pestilence they suffer year in and year out. No wonder they grasp the latest biological engineering that will make their crops bulletproof against disease and/or unappetizing to the pests. The dastardly villains in my garden are squirrels and armadillos. If I lived in the country, I would definitely sit out at night with a pistol loaded with snake shot, but with my neighbors house 15 feet away I have horrible visions of putting holes in her house - or mine. Picture Cameron Diaz in "Night and Day". Not to mention what snake shot might do to rose bushes. I tried traps without success. Yesterday I found an armadillo hole in the front circle and decided to act. Don't call me stupid - just desperate, but before sundown assuming they were down there, I took a plastic pot about the same size as the hole and hammered it up-side-down into the hole, essentially plugging it. I'm totally aware that they can dig out around the pot - that's what's stupid about it. Then I went to the hole under my bedroom windows and hammered a big square pot into the hole up against the house and a dishpan up against the pot with a bag of chicken manure on it and a couple of ceramic tiles on the ground next to the dishpan. This morning I checked them. They were not dislodged or dug around. Could it be possible that as we speak those armadillos are dying a horrible, thirsty death in those holes??? Please say yes. Kim, I loved the poisoned pigeons video. Are there as many words that rhyme with armadillos as there are that rhyme with pigeons? Sherry P.S. Oops, I just read that dead armadillos really, really stink terribly. How disgusting. Ya think the smell will penetrate a cement slab foundation? Oy vey.
