Shingle Color Match

Our new home has Certainteed AR Charcoal Color (Architectural) shingles. The shingles have been purchased and installed by our builder. In addition to the house, I am building another large 50' x 40' structure on the property. I can get a significant discount on Owens Corning shingles on my own from another resource I have through my work. They do not carry Certainteed. Only Owens Corning and GAC.

My question is... Our HOA requires that all roofs must match. Does anyone know what color from Owens Corning and GAC will match Certainteed "Charcoal".

Call Owens Corning and GAC customer support and ask them. Most manufacturers know exactly how their product colors compare to the competition.

I'll give that a try. We are using Lowes and their Pro Desk couldn't find the match.

Is this just a picture that you've seen or a house in your area? If it's in your area, ask your roofer to drive by - he'll know what color it is. I changed my roof color and had a terrible time deciding on a color. My roofer suggested that I drive through my neighborhood, email him the addresses of roofs I liked, and then he emailed back to me what they were. Worked like a charm and I'm VERY happy with my choice!

Hi, I am looking into adding a vinyl siding type shingle to the top of our 1920S dutch colonial and keeping the wood at the bottom. The bottom is something we can repaint on our own over the years but the second floor is challenging to paint. My question is, are there any brands of siding that also has a paint color that would match the siding? I’m having trouble figuring this out in a search. I know I can try and match the color but anytime I do this when needing touch ups, it’s never quite the same color. Looking for a true color and brand. Thanks

Wow, I didnt even see the columns until they were changed to white- good job. I would leave the white triim around front door and side lights - you need that to better define the doorway, AND to be consistent with and visually connect wth the windows on 2nd floor directly above the door. Paint the door slab itself a deep dark purple-red, andlast but not least, ditch the aluminum storm door. What a lovely house - glad to hear you are not futzing with the exterior cos it looks pretty well put together as it is (aside from the few minor tweaks).

Well this is interesting. Both OC and GAC said "we do not have any way to color match with CertainTeed".

Do you have any extra Certainteed shingles? If you do, I would take them to a local OC and GAC distributor to compare with their sample displays. Once you narrow down a color, they should be able to give you a local address that used that shingle, for you to see in person.

Even after you do all that ... your HOA might still turn you down because it isn't the exact same material!

I just went through the chore of picking a cement tile roof for a new house and the distributors of the 3 brands I looked at, were all very nice and super helpful.

No ones shingles will match 100%. They all use blends today and they all have their own blends. Best you can do is to physically look and compare.

Get as close as you can with the shingle manufacturer you choose and have the other structure have the same roof pitch as the house. If the HOA doesn't like it tell them to squint their eyes.

Perfect! I think we told the HOA the roof color. I don't think we gave them the exact manufacturer and color.

Today I went to the store with my CertainTeed shingle (Charcoal) and found the Owens Corning (Onyx Black). It looks really close to the CertainTeed. I can't imagine someone from the HOA walking up to the house and the building, rubbing their hand over their chin saying... "wait a minute...."

Keep up your sleeve, "Must be a different dye lot", or "The shingles faded", or "It's the sun angle".

Very true! I said the same thing to my builder about the brickwork. We had foundation brick delivered and laid. Only enough brick was delivered for that portion. It will be 6 months before the next order is delivered to complete the remaining exterior wall brick. I asked the builder "will it match?". He assured me it would. Hope so.
