I think the flagstone, bluestone idea for the steps will look nice. I agree, I would remove the shutters and beef up the molding around your windows.

But honestly, consider your landscaping......good landscaping transforms a home.

Are you interested in more of a porch look vs deck?

Located in Mid-Atlantic. More of a porch look I would say. If we go with the stone steps, I suspect the concrete walkway would look out of place and should be updated to flagstone as well which makes this a lot bigger of a project

I think the bluestone would look nice there, but, there is nothing wrong with a nice looking porch out of decking either. I like the shutters on your house. It adds something.

The shutters don't fit the size of the windows; it would look much nicer to remove them and add beefier trim. It would also help to paint your downspouts the same color as the siding and add a bush to hide the utility boxes on the right corner of your house. If you opt for a wooden porch, you might consider adding a wooden arbor over the door, with roses or a flowering vine on it; that would add interest to the flat plane of the front of your house. Another nice add-on would be three window boxes in the same wood as your porch, filled with bright flowers. And if the porch is large enough, you could put some colorful pots on it as well. You have the potential for a really cute home, just by adding a little color and a few finishing touches like house numbers and a bigger porch light.

I just did composite decking. don't cheap out. I got really primo TimberTech Azek Vintage Collection. I originally chose Cypress, but they were out of stock like, forever, so I decided to pivot and go with what I thought was dark brown instead. I went with "English Walnut". I saw BIG samples of these in the store, where they had built a mini-patio out of different materials, so you could really get a good feel for them. But those mini patios were displayed indoors, and unfortunately, that same material when viewed outdoors turned out way more pale and drab. I wish I had chosen the one in the middle: "Mahogany", since it's so much warmer.

(I took these sample pics in weird light. Trust me that the porch in the 2nd pic really is English Walnut. It changes drastically in different light.)

BUT, this material is beautiful. Far superior to all of the competitors (Trex looks insanely fake compared to this stuff). also: this material is GRIPPY, even when it's completely wet. And it's so easy to sweep clean. Once I add railing and some planters and stuff, I honestly think I'm going to love this porch.

MY ADVICE: I wish I had gone for a two tone effect, where only the top is composite and the sides are real wood painted to match the house siding or trim (like below). Building the whole porch out of all one material looks very one-note boring. It's the tops that you need to be really durable anyway, the sides don't take a beating. It might cost a little less too.

ADVICE #2: Don't trust online photos, especially the marketing ones. Buy a whole bunch of the boards well before the project starts, and lay it out over your existing porch. View it during different times of the day to see if you really like the color. I wish I had done that!
