How long will large dahlia plants bloom if started early?
Comments (5)I got a fairly long bloom season the year before last with Vassio Meggos bought from Swan Island. It's listed as producing 9" flowers, but I allowed it to grow 3 main lateral stems after topping at 3rd leaf level, and I didn't do any disbudding, so it didn't grow any 9" flowers, but they were usually averaged from 6 - 7.5". Oddly, once late October rolled around, Vassio Meggos actually started its most prolific bloom phase to date, with 8 flowers on it at once! Unfortunately we got our 1st hard frost on like Nov 2nd, which wiped most of them out before they had fully opened. I'd say I got a total of 20-25 flowers on it in the 2 months it bloomed. But on my one Freckle Face plant from Swan Island 2 years ago I got 80-100 flowers of 3 - 3.5" in nearly 3 months of blooming, and its listed as a 3" flower producer, so even with 6 laterals, almost no disbudding, it still always grew flowers of at least 3 , at least til the end of October when the suddenly got small due to the colder weather and serious lack of sunlight....See MoreDahlias have started blooming in Canada
Comments (29)I don't think it is Lady Darlene either. I don't even think it is what the label stated when purchased. See the label below. The tag is also considerably different from the link posted by plantlady2008. Unfortunately, there are a lot of different ideas about what Lady Darlene really looks like. see also: http://www.dahlias.net/dahwebpg/Gallery/GalleryHtms/LadyDarlene.htm http://www.kvbwholesale.com/store/dahlias/decorative/60774 http://www.dahlia.org/cgi-bin/guide/dahlia.cgi?LADY+DARLENE http://arrowheaddahlias.com/pics/dahlia_lady_darlene.jpg It is frustrating for the purchaser when the retailer is selling something other than what it should be. Will the real Lady Darlene please stand up! In the end of it all, it still is a pretty flower. Thanks for commenting plantlady2008. Comments (7)Hi keepitlow you asked in other thread When do you put them out for good? My figs are still dormant with little green tips. Should I start putting mine outside too? I put them out for good when night temps NEVER dip below about 40 but never on grass always on blacktop driveway or cement patio which keeps my containrs somewhat warmer. It varies from year to year. Some of mine now have green buds but there still tight and when they start to open the night time temps usually do not get below 40 but there have been odd years so if we get a cold spell they go back in garage until it passes. I then move them to the back yard patio eventually and leave them there for season in full sun. You asked should you put your outside too, what state do you live in? Do you have a place to easily move them back in at night when temps get below 40 each time? Are your containers 1 to 3 gallons or plants 1 season old? Im very careful about the temps the last 7 seasons and never have hurt them but im sort of a fanatic when it comes to my fig plants. ; ) You also metioned Last season I wintered all my figs in a unheated shed in Z6....all 6 of them died! I lost my first plant doing that in my backyard shed, i gave nextdoor neighbor a plant several years old and he stored in his shed covered with blanket thinking his would be ok but it died as well. Mine go in attached insulated garage each year as that 1 loss was enough for me. Martin...See MoreAnyone planting their veggies earlier than usual this spring?
Comments (6)Cooler temperatures increase the likelihood of damping off in seedling trays. If you aren't using a heat mat, you may want to review the UC Davis pest notes http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74132.html Some folks indoors set up a fan near the seedling trays to get air movement and right now finding ways to keep them warm is probably most important (row covers, cold frame if outdoors, warmer places if inside). I've been debating about a quickie warm area - one roofing panel with some cinderblocks, https://www.lowes.com/pd/Tuftex-SeaCoaster-2-17-ft-x-8-ft-Corrugated-PVC-Roof-Panel/50428646 (side plus four blocks for the corners on top to hold it down in wind, low to the ground should help). I like the idea that I could dismantle it in spring....See MoreJeb zone 5
