It this office where you to your job, or where you pay bills and mess around on the computer? Are zoom meetings part of what goes on here?

Hi- It will be a space for some level of remote working. More than just an in-home type workspace.

Don't build in any cabinets, desk space or shelving. Not unless you want to rip it all out when you put the house up for sale. People want to see the rooms dressed like what they are intended to be -- if it's supposed to be a bedroom, it has to look like one. Since it will be a space for remote working with possible zoom meetings, make the background neutral, no patterned wallpaper - it will be distracting to the people who are looking at you on the zoom meeting. A medium toned paint not too bright white or gray - you want your face to stand out but without a glare on people's computer screens. Face the desk outward if you can with the wall behind you. Think of that small space like a self contained office. Place nice stand alone shelving on the side wall, and perhaps a low table on the other side and a chair for visitors. You can place pictures or decorative artwork on the wall behind you, just make it not too wild.

This one is my favorite...once again stand alone credenza type office furniture on the back wall, with not quite built ins on the side for other stuff. You could use a large desk with a hutch on the back of it.

How many people will use the computer? 9 am to 5 pm a couple days a week? If you have two people using the computer, it would be better to buy a second computer and have two desks. If you only need to use a computer for occasional Zoom meetings, put the desks facing out, line the walls with bookshelves and file cabinets in matching finishes. Bland artwork directly behind the desk chair will keep the Zoomer's focus on your head, not on interesting art.

For light use, Sauder brand office furniture will work fine for a few years. Ikea furniture is a bit sturdier. If you prefer better quality furniture, look at Stanley brand.

Hi- thanks for the comments so far. we appreciate your thoughts. We did think about just leaving the wall alone with somw artwork but we are in need of something in the space, as we are moving from a home which contained cabinets and bookshelves to one without such furnishings.

It does seem as though people are more inclined to get commercial furniture rather than having something made. A lower storage unit with bland decor above it. Bookshelves to the side. We just have more stuff than could be placed in that set-up so the upper bookshelves would be helpful in that regards.

The room is fairly large, so this office/sitting area is easily 15x15. We plan on some light remote working and then home office type work. We are trying to avoid making it too “officey” so that when it is time to move out (no current plans soon for that - we are just moving in!). As noted, we would like the area to be ”office-functional” but look more ”sitting area-like” in terms of decor. We just need to be able to hide as much of the stuff as possible.

Why not isnstall an actual closet on that wall nd do a closet type office that could be esaily converted to extra storage for future owners is the mesurement for the whole bedroom or just this space

Definitely do not match your furniture to your floor. Lighter wood or painted furniture would be better. If you need space for actual files there are some very attractive file cabinets on the market now. On the plus side you will be able to take them with you when and if you move. Remember that visual clutter is not conducive to a good night’s rest and maybe think of other areas in your home to store your stuff. For inspiration IKEA has a specific site for home offices, design within reach is also reaching out to the home office market, as are many other retailers.

If your objective is to hide stuff buy attractive storage units in white and paint your walls to coordinate with the rest of the decor in your room.

If you have the money and time, design a perfect wall unit that can be taken away when you leave. Bedrooms sell a house so anything that makes your bedroom look smaller will work against resale. For your own comfort, you need to figure out how much closed storage, filing drawers and open shelves will make the space optimally functional. Then figure in the desk and chair. Anything can be built and be removable. Take the time to calculate your actual needs so the “office” area is used and makes you happy.

Would google IKEA hacks and see just how inexpensively you can create all kinds of storage using the bases of the Billy cabinets, and others, coupled with doors from SemiHandMade. Would also go white, or a bold blue, and accessorize the room to work with it. Don't forget a large rug to anchor the room, drapes, plants and spaces to hide the electrical cords and clutter.
