Did you watch the Ben & Jerry's contest on Food Network?

It was nice breakfast fluff, but from the beginning I couldn't figure out if it was a big, long Ben & Jerry's infomercial or a legit Food Network contest. The production company makes a lot of contest shows for FN, as well as other shows, but that doesn't mean anything in trying to tease out the answer. I like watching this kind of show because they don't require a lot of attention, are always pleasant (no snark or violence, just a little braggadocio).

This one was actually vapid, however. There was no real content there. I didn't learn anything about making ice cream. The inserted informational bits were about Ben & Jerry's. The contestants were pros, who said what they were making, but no real explanations beyond the obvious. The four things I learned, three in the last episode: (1) If you're making a small batch B&J's style swirl with chunks and want to keep the components distinct, layer them in your freezer pan, with the distribution you want, so as you scoop across you get some of everything without literally swirling the components. (2) B&J's develop their chunks, including chocolate and similar, to melt at a lower temperature than normal so you don't get that hard block in melting ice cream thing. (3) Toasting puffed rice cereal will make it stay crunchy in ice cream. (4) (From a contestant) Seafood Seasoning Caramel (or caramel corn). I'm not big on salted caramel, but Old Bay caramel sounds fab.

Any other thoughts?
