Installing Drywall Above The Mantel
Comments (10)Thinking alike for sure! Do you happen to know if cement backer board meets fire codes? I seem to remember there being a special fire resistant drywall for garage walls, but maybe it's insulation I'm thinking of. We're still in the research and planning stage. Work will begin early September when dh has some time off. Not sure if we're talking about the same thing but the metal furring strips I looked at do look like a U and I believe are also called Furring Channels. Probably same things? This site talks about installing a basement or masonry wall insluator - but the revelant part states to use either a adhesvie caulk or nails to attach the furring to the masonry. Other websites I saw mentioned using Liquid Nails - sounds a whole lot easier than driving a nail into brick! It doesn't seem that difficult of a project once you break it down. Glue the strips; Measure, Cut & Screw on the backer board (guess we'll need to remember the distance of furring strips...and drywall screws long enough to go throug furring but not brick). Tape, Mud, Sand. Finish work (the fun stuff imho). It'll probably only be 10x as hard and 100x as many hours as I hope for ;) And my dh is *still* considering knocking out all the brick - I'd love to get rid of the jutting sides but not sure about all that heavy work. Have you dry-walled before? We did a basement in our old home a few years back. Here is a link that might be useful: Picture of Metal Furring Channel...See MoreDrywall over brick
Comments (9)You might consider using cement board rather than gypsum wall board. 1/2" over the brick using tapcon masonry screws carefully driven and similar to drywall, sinking the head of the screw. You can mesh tape the seams and finish similar to drywall with the final coat being a skim coat after you get the seam areas decently flat. Trying to go the 1/4" drywall route with screws will be frustrating as there isn't enough substance or ridgidity to keep the screws from being driven all the way through. Cement board is a little more work establishing a smooth finish, but is doable....See Moredrywall around window looks so bad
Comments (15)The first thing, I would do, is clean it up. Get all the paint from the walls off the window frame etc. The next thing I would do, is get someone to mud and fix the drywall, because, that looks terrible. By the time, you get all that done, you will have a better idea, of what else you need to do. A reputable contractor, would not have left a mess like that. Maybe look for a new contractor, that actually knows what they are doing....See MoreInstalling picture windows on either side of brick fireplace?
Comments (4)" Could I have narrow windows installed easily between the existing studs? " Can they be installed, yes. Easily, depends on your definition of easily. Siding, insulation and sheathing comes off for the exterior. Interior finishes all come off. Wall gets reframed with studs doubled up most likely, sill with cripple studs, header installed. Install windows, reinstall sheathing, siding, etc. Interior finishes reinstalled and your good to go. WAG, $5,000 -$6000 plus the windows and you will be all set....See Moreptreckel
