Bad night for weather

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes around me. We had a storm the sky was black as pitch, and high winds (I brought everything off the balcony and took down my flag) but tornadoes went around us.

This is a beach town couple of hours away.

Mother nature is scary and stunning at the same time.

Wow, awesome (and scary) picture! I'm glad your area was spared the worst of the weather. Good to pay attention, and take in items that could blow away and you'd lose them, or cause problems if they blew somewhere unsafe.

I corralled all my jugs(top and topless)into a "box" made out of 6in deck wood and will cover this with old blankets (you can use sheets or towels)then maybe black plastic. I've tried to stagger the topless next to the topped ones so no-one gets squished. The zinnias and sunflowers I was thinking of putting in the garage. I wonder if putting bubble wrap around stuff thats already planted(morning glories)will do any good???-B

I agree, grannyjojo, that we often get hit here as well. I have seen more twisters in the air, and more damage on the ground, since moving here in '99 than I saw in 39 years in Fort Worth. (We moved here about 6 or 8 weeks before the 1999 OKC/Moore tornadoes, although that night was quiet here in Love County. Our friends and DH's co-workers in Texas heard about the storms in OKC on their evening news, though, and our phone was ringing off the wall.) Our house was new that year and didn't have a tornado shelter, but we added one the following spring. Although a few major downtown areas have been hit by tornadoes in recent years (like Ft. Worth, Nashville and Atlanta, and, of course, OKC), I don't think ANY major city in the USA has been hit by tornadoes more than OKC. The other day the Weather Channel said OKC has been struck by over 100 tornadoes since such records have been kept. It's just that this year (so far) we get the watches and warnings but not the tornadoes (at least here in southern OK), even the rain and the hail, and then we go to bed....and wake up the next morning only to find that the line of storms left Oklahoma and marched across the south or midwest and caused damage and destruction. It seems to have been a very persistent weather pattern from January through now. It will be interesting to see if that pattern continues through April or May, of if things change as we heat up a little. Tonight the storms have been running from Fort Worth-Dallas up through the very southeastern edge of Oklahoma and into Arkansas and beyond. We've had lightning here throughout the night, and a little thunder, but the actual rain and hail have stayed south and southeast of us. I am concerned about the next 2 days here. We, too, keep an eye on the weather at all times and are avid weather watchers. (I think you MUST do that when you live here.) We have two weather radios with the alert feature that goes off to warn of approaching weather and we keep the storm cellar fully stocked with supplies, etc. I check the NWS Enhanced Weather Webpages and the Storm Prediction Center pages every day, and sometimes several times a day, to keep track of the storms. Living out in the boonies as we do, there are no storm sirens here in the less populated parts of the county, and we're too far away to hear the ones in town, so we have to look out for ourselves. Started receiving catalogs so starting the search for friendly plants. Has been strange this year have not seen or heard and geese flying south this year. May change now because parts of MN received 10 or so inches of snow according to weather bureau. Bump

The gc didn't finish his job, so the teacher was on the roof trying to get it finished. It is just a bad situation. I know we will have to pay the gc, but at least I will feel better about it AFTER he cleans up his mess. As far as ideal situation goes, no....we are not in an ideal situation, but we knew that going into the deal. The experience the students get from building this house is priceless, and I am proud to be a part of it. I am disappointed that when we called in a local contractor to help out...........he was the one who didn't do what he said. He was doing the underlayment so the students could proceed with the shingles. Time is an issue since the students will be on Christmas Break after this week. The students only work a few hours a day, so by hiring a contractor to work 8 hours a day we were hoping to have the roof ready for the students to put on shingles. I don't expect most of you to understand, it is a learning project and we benefit by only buying the materials for the most part. I just expect when someone tells me they will finish something by a certain date.....for that to be true. Had the contractor finished what he said he could do on time, the teacher wouldn't have been on the roof in the first place. It will all work out. I just wanted a sympathetic ear, I guess.

Powerful photo! Last evening we had high winds and -- at long last -- RAIN! We've had 20 inches on an annual norm of 28; really dry summer. This may have added half an inch.

Jas, that's really beautiful. We came home to 70F here on the coast after low 90's visiting in my mothers city yesterday. We stopped at a nursery on our way home and there were signs on the greenhouses 'Please don't linger and become ill from the heat inside'.

There were thunderstorms and rain in our forecast that didn't happen. 60's and very light drizzle today, certainly boring compared to yours.

We so seldom have thunder or lightening here on the coast I find it interesting when it does take place. And, my trees could use some rain.

Hope the bad weather has moved on. It stormed here earlier today and woke me up a couple times. I wasn't expecting rain today and thought I could weed eat the yard. It is overgrown, mowing company hasn't come for a month now so I've been trying to weed eat it. They kept telling me they were coming last week but never showed up. They had covid and said their quarantine was up but then spiked a fever the last time. I don't want to keep bothering them if they're sick. Weedeating with an electric weedeater is slow going as the batteries don't last long, even with 3 of them.

That picture is pretty terrifying. I used to love storms and would watch them when I was younger and living in Tucson. Every summer afternoon the monsoons would come in and there'd be some beautiful lightening with them.

We had the tail end of Ida last week. Had to drive to our daughter's house in MD in that torrential downpour. Definitely a white knuckled drive. I agree with others tho, that pic is amazing.

Wow. That is spectacular. Now, excuse me while I go put down our umbrellas since we are supposed to get storms tonight and if they are like that (moving north maybe? Not sure where you are), Ithey would blow out of the tables!
