I don't think it needs to stick out very far...just ....maybe....3/8". It's a rounded shape...so it won't look like a dogs muzzle if it's too far. And...IF you think it's protruding too far out...you can take it in. You won't be stuck. ♥

I'm currently fighting with my Bernina! SCREAM!!!!! It has thread stuck in it....can't get it out. Having to take the whole outside plastic casing off. OH....the screw on the side of the bobbin...too tight......got it. ♥ Sewing machines!!!!!!!!! I'm trying to use thick thread for leather.....

You can edit your original post and include the sewing forum to get better responses. It is not extremely active, but there are people who visit there at least weekly that have good advice. I also visit the sewing forum about weekly, and so you might have to be a bit patient in order to get the response that you need.

I'm not sure what you mean by "unknown part." Do you have a photo of a finished item?

Lars....see part number 19 in her photo? It's the bears muzzle. She lost pattern piece #19 and is trying to decide how deep....high high the bears muzzle should stand "out" on it's face.....a coyote might stick out more and be more pointed for instance.

The photo of part #19 looks like 2 sections only. That information may make guessing how to create the muzzle easier for you.

Images of 'felt bears' online show several with the muzzle being a flat oval sewn onto the face. You may want to do this and then you can have a one-of-a-kind ornament that you designed yourself.

This seems to illustrate not 'Sewing', but 'Fabric Engineering'. Doesn't that sound *superior*?

I would start with the size of the head for a piece and lay over head pattern piece and trim until you get the desired shape and size. Not sure if I am explaining that correctly sorry. Initially you will have your head piece and another head piece cut of fabric for the muzzle. Trim Muzzle to size wanted while laid on top of head piece.

Take the upper head piece and fold it in half. put it on a piece of paper and draw along the curve where the missing piece will go-the seam with the two marking points. Fold the front of your bear-the belly-in half and lay it at the bottom-that gives you the length of the bottom of your pattern piece. that seam will be the front neck seam. Draw along that line and then make a nice curve from the top to the right bottom point and bob is your uncle. It looks like the right side curve is very similar to the left. Cut out your pattern piece, cut two and sew. I would add seam allowances for just in case because you can always trim.

You might try making a mockup out of paper to be able to judge the best shape. Seam allowances can be added when cutting. It looks like a very small piece.

You might post a pic of the pattern envelop picture and post it. Maybe someone has this pattern.

nicole, that heavy sewing thread may be too heavy for the bobbin case. Of course I dont know what model you have, but, on my old mechanical Bernina there is a hole in the little finger of the bobbin case. For some threads you can just skip pulling the heavy thread through the tension plate and just thread it through the hole. This works for things like elastic thread. That is what the hole is for.

You might give it a try, if you have that little hole in your bobbin case.

You are likely to ruin your bobbin case by forcing thread that is too thick throught the tension. Some people even keep a dedicated bobbin case to use for heavier threads that has the tension loosened. I made sure to get and to keep a new bobbin case for my old Bernina as I am afraid that one may not be available in the near future.

wednesday morning.....got it! I had to adjust the thread tension and loosen the screw on the bobbin case itself, then lengthen the stitch. It had red embroidery thread stuck in the top thread tension slot.......DH noticed it. He made a little hook out of copper wire to pull it out. It's ready to go!

I LOVE my Bernina....but I love it so much I hardly ever use it. I have a spare, cheap machine that I use for everyday stuff. My husband is trying to get me to purchase a commercial sewing machine, but at my age, I just don't feel I have that many projects in me. ha ha My Bernina is fine and not that basic either. It has a touch screen, fully computerized. Does AMAZING embroidery patterns.

rob333, Oops, missed the link. Will keep my eye out for ant similar pattern. Going to Joann's tomorrow, but sure they wouldn't have it. I got rid of almost all my patterns a few years back, did not have that one. Butterick 4662 is now a maternity pattern! Will watch at St. Vinny's, Goodwill and Salvation Army stores.
