Patterns $ sewing for profit

Hi! Someone mentioned that pattern companies have "fine print" saying that one cannot use their patterns for profit. I don't sell anything that I sew, so I never noticed this printed on the envelope. Just out of curiosity, I compared old and new patterns, and see that this restriction has not always been on there.

Actually, this statement "Sold for individual home use only and not for commercial or manufacturing purposes." needs professional legal interpretation for me. Do they mean that a sewist cannot use the system of buying a pattern for each item that they sew for payment, because even if you did that, you'd be using it for manufacturing purposes?

Also, I'm guessing that old patterns are ok for "commercial or manufacturing purposes", if they don't have a printed restriction? bggs
