This is an old thread which I happened to come across in a search to hide vertical blinds in a rental--in my case, over sliding doors. Check with the HOA if you live where there is one because some do not allow the slats to be taken down in order to preserve the symmetry on the outside, especially in "cookie cutter" neighborhoods. Verticals may be dated--but then so are the ideas of many HOA's-- and the fines are very real and can be quite steep. If you rent, you may be charged by the owners for any fees incurred for the violation of some very antiquated and weird rule. And there are some owners who do not want them removed for whatever reason, which can become a hassle when inspection time comes up before rent renewal.

We're probably going to repaint the outside of the house soon but the stucco is definitely something I have no talent for. Plus I'm don't know enough about the code requirements for siding. I read a question like this on Angie's List and one contractor said that the whole process would cost about $300. Does that seem in the ballpark? I'm in southern California so I know things are more expensive here but we're just trying to see if this is even something we should consider.

I understand decoenthusiaste’s suggestion - it would equalize the differences in window tops so it makes sense. You wouldn’t have to lower the shades on French doors though as just having the shades & drapes mounted at same height on wall accomplishes that. It would look like smaller window had shade half way down. If you simply add the same kind of blind to doors (under the drape) you’ll also accomplish a more unified look with treatments. That still leaves the large wall space above the smaller window. if you don’t want a rod & drapes there you could add art or an interesting wall decor piece. Your comment about wanting color in “ this very White House” is a different topic! You have a white coverlet on bed & darker art piece on wall. Change those out to brighter colors & maybe you change the white linen window covering to a color pulled from those things. Don’t see what’s on the floor - area rugs?

@HU-36691265 - Sorry for confusion - I can clearly see the middle windows are separate! it will look great doing inside mount with a single shade for each window! It would also look great outside mounted but you won’t know your options until you find out how much space the header takes for the style of shade you decide on. It might be really tight in space between molding top & soffit on that right window. If you’re needing window treatments for your entire house, it’s worth it to have someone come to your house. @Flo Mangan mentioned Smith and Noble & there are others - Budget Blinds etc. They all have many styles of shade & blinds & are really helpful. You might get a new house discount if you ask& are doing all the windows. @Lorraine Blasetti - Drapes have been discussed at length & don’t work in this situation! The OP prefers drapes too but has wisely moved on! 😊 Blinds also come in fabrics i.e. Silhouettes etc.
