Hmm - you’ve got quite the challenge there! Is this home a new build or resale? I’m asking because if resale, I’m curious how prior owner handled. But, for me, I like symmetry. I especially think symmetry is necessary in this situation to de emphasize the duct work bulkhead on right. You’re talking about curtains & rods. I’m wondering about blinds or Roman Shades either inside mounted or outside mounted just at top of window casing so all four are same height. If outside mounted, the two center windows could be one long blind or shade. I don’t know the formality level or style of this room but Roman shades can be done in so many different finishes and trim levels.

Thanks so much for the response. The living room is not formal by any means, so this could work. I just figured curtains are the way to go... I like the look of curtains best, so hadn't really considered much else, but maybe roman shades are the way to go. Thanks for the idea!

Interior plantation shutters might be nice too. I think they’re pretty pricey & they do take up window space so if there’s a view you want to see out those windows that might be an issue.. These plantation shutters are seen often in coastal & tropical areas. It’s a totally different look than drapes & curtains & focuses attention on the windows.

purchase a wall to wall curtain rod place it above the window towards the ceiling however one end of the rod would have to be placed above the vent that way the room can be symmetrical.

You need an inside mount solution such as shutters or Roman shades as suggested above. A curtain rod won’t look right.

it's a Bay Area why wouldn't the curtain rod look right. The curtains will work. This is what you will need.

There’s not enough space above the window frame and below the soffit to hang a rod. The window treatment will look better contained as an inside mount.

@claire larece - I don’t think a curtain hung at or close to ceiling all around will look good over the right window. See how far the soffit for the ducting comes out over the window? That side of the curtain would be hanging in mid air about two feet from the window & wall.

A. You will have to hang in the space allowed on the right window for all of them. I feel it's the only way to feel visually comfortable.

Hanging drapes floor to ceiling isn't always the best choice or best designed room.

Hang them at the top of the window. I think there is not much that looks more ridiculous than a curtain rod spanning a wall mid way between the ceiling and the top of the window casing.

I agree with Flo. Even if they weren’t woven shades then inside mount Roman blinds. They could be in the same fabric as drapes and full block out or not

Actually, another question (sorry!). @KW PNW Z8 and @Flo Mangan suggested inside-mount shades with one long shade for the middle window, which I really like the idea of, but the middle windows are actually separated by the trim so if mounted on the inside, I would have to use two separate shades for each window. Would it look terrible to do outside-mounted shades instead of inside mounted?

Inside mounted (yes, four panels total) will give you the cleanest look.

Agreed. Use 4 inside mounted shades. Depending on your view and privacy needs, you might consider a top down bottom up shade.

Shades will work. Personally I prefer a softening feel by using drapes or fabric. It's what feeling and vision you prefer.

@HU-36691265 - Sorry for confusion - I can clearly see the middle windows are separate! it will look great doing inside mount with a single shade for each window! It would also look great outside mounted but you won’t know your options until you find out how much space the header takes for the style of shade you decide on. It might be really tight in space between molding top & soffit on that right window. If you’re needing window treatments for your entire house, it’s worth it to have someone come to your house. @Flo Mangan mentioned Smith and Noble & there are others - Budget Blinds etc. They all have many styles of shade & blinds & are really helpful. You might get a new house discount if you ask& are doing all the windows.

@LB Interiors - Drapes have been discussed at length & don’t work in this situation! The OP prefers drapes too but has wisely moved on! 😊 Blinds also come in fabrics i.e. Silhouettes etc.

Well, so @HU-36691265, there you have it! @LB Interiors says drapes will work even for that right window. So, I guess the answer is, get a window coverings person into your home to assess the situation first hand and give you your workable options! Maybe you can have what you wanted in first place or maybe after this discussion you’ve opened up to new and different window treatments! Please Let us know which direction you take!
