It's slate

I second real slate, not printed porcelain or ceramic since there are no repeat patterns in the tiles.

It’s slate circa 2000. The big box stores were importing a ton of it from China and India. Less common now but you may still be able to find some.

The mantel below is what I’m copying. Is there a more current tile that you could recommend? Any/all ideas welcome—wide open to suggestions for both headth and fireplace surround..thank you all.

Check into a company called Cleftstone - they have all kinds of slates.

This may not be the right place to post..apologies if thats the case..Can anyone pick out a type of stone or tile or something that would look good for me?? Contractors are tearing down now and theyre asking me...what do i know..disabled—cant go out and wouldnt know style if it bit me. Theyll want to pick it up at big box lowes or HD.

So basically if it were you, what do you think would look decent we can throw on there to update it and look nice? Thanks again for your time. Chris

The look that is in your picture is a ledger stone , basically it is a sort of veneer that gives that stacked stone look. I don't know that is something that is stocked at a Home Depot or Lowes. They will mostly have flat tile, nothing with dimension like that.

Try going online and searching tile that is in stock at your local store. It may different for the area you are in
