RIP Ed Asner.

Ed Asner has passed away at 91, a long life well played. I loved him in anything in which he was a character. My sister was lucky to see him in person a few years ago when he came to her city’s theater.

May he rest in peace. And may Mr. Grant and the spunky Mary meet up again in the next act.

As a 9 year old kid in Elk City, OK in 1950, I met Tim Holt, Fuzzy Knight & Randolph Scott who were some of my favorite cowboy movie stars that made personal appearances at a local movie theatre. And, during our town's 50th. anniversary in 1951 I met & shook hands with Jess Willard who had been the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, 1915-1919. He lived in my hometown during the early days & helped lay the bricks that paved Broadway St. and are still there and "in use" now in 2006! Moving ahead several years and after I had moved to PA...my wife & I saw Richard M. Nixon as he arrived by helicopter and dined at the then-famous Bookbinder's Restaurant in Philadelphia one evening while we were eating dinner there also. Then later, during the mid-1970's, we saw "The Duke" John Wayne in New York City getting out of his limousine and greeting the gathering crowd at Rockefeller Center. Guess that's about it... LarryD

If you are space limited, you might consider the Festool plunge cut circular saw, which comes with a precise guide. The reviews suggest it is the equivalent of a panel saw for accuracy. It will do precise 45 degree rips, too. I have a Delta contractor's table saw, but given the space it takes up, I'd trade it for a Festool. I've demo'ed one, but the cost is a little dear until I have a project that needs it. I have ripped 2x ipe - ironwood - with a Milwaukee circular saw and a cheap carbide blade. I can't imagine ripping beadboard would be worse. I just set it up on sawhorses and planks I didn't care about. You can make a cheap cross cut jig by putting a bridge across a 2x - square and nail a guide to the bridge to run the edge of the circular saw against. Make sure the guide is at 90 degrees to another guide you nail to the lengthwise edge of the 2x. You feed the beadboard through the bridge - nail a stop on the 2x and you can cut the bead board w/o measuring each piece. This jig is a lot cheaper than a compound miter saw.

I need help with some "F"ed up palmatum roots

Roots are not as delicate as most might think. I remember my father yelling "Don't disturb the roots!!!" when trans-planting the garden veggies when I was a kid. If he would have been there when I made a juniper bonsai from a nursery stock, or when I root pruned my potted JMs, he would have passed out! I would water it real good for a few days and on the last sunny day before you get a string of cloudy/days, I would rip off all the burlap and wire, hose off all the clay and plant the tree. Be certain to keep the roots moist and out of direct sunlight. Use an old bath towel or too sprayed with the hose to cover what you're not working on. Also, be certain there are no large voids in the dirt when you plant. You might get a bit of transplant shock, but in the long run the tree will be much better off without all that crap on the root ball.

I loved Mr. Asner in all his roles. All my old TV actors are dying off. RIP, Ed.

One of my favorites, ever since the MTM Show. I was watching him just last night in Grace and Frankie. He will be missed.

RIP Ed Asner.

My mom attended the same high school as Ed. She was a few years older than he was but in the same class as his brother Labe. She said they hung out in the same crowd and remembered Ed sometimes tagging along with the older kids.

I read the title. The name is familiar.... Reading the first post - ah, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, probably the best sitcom of that era.

Definite sorry that he has passed, but 91 meant a good full near-century of quality life! RIP.
