Any use for rock candy gems?

A friend gave me a bag of rock candy that's shaped similar to emerald-cut gems -- each piece looks to be about 3 carats. lol! Rock candy isn't the kind of thing I'd just pop in my mouth. Any ideas of what to do with it? crush it to top cookies, maybe? or should I just head it to the compost pile? :)

i have finished drying my onions and have final info. i pulled them on 8/19 about 1 week later than past years. i left them lay in the garden until 8/29 when i moved them to the shed and put them on racks to dry. on 10/8 i cut the tops and trimmed the roots. i had 3 or 4 candy that were bad and 1 that was out right rotten. all red wing and all copra were fine, not 1 single bad onion. i put each variety into a 50 pound bag and i was unable to get the last 10 pounds of candy into the bag! candy most 5 to 6" in diameter - 52 pounds copra most 2 1/2 to 3" in diameter - 33 pounds red wing most 3 to 4" in diameter - 25 pounds candy were planted 6" on center while the other 2 were 4" on center, all started from seed on 2/27, put out late on 5/5, all grown in a 4' X 4' square. i am impressed with candy, excellent sized and only 1 onion was a double bulb which i don't care for, ace made lots of doubles. candy is now my sweet onion. i hope candy stores to february because this is a lot of onions! tom

Couple thoughts - I don't understand why they can't match it. Have to assume there isn't a chip. Because whether the formula/colorants changed or not, someone could custom match to the chip. If you don't have a chip from the store, you could also paint-out your own chip using leftover paint if you have any. Chip from the store or a hand-painted sample - either way - you could take it to any paint store and using the chip/sample they could custom mix the color. And if you don't have chip/sample, you can still go to another brand/store and have them mix the color using their database of other paint brand's formulas. Lastly, could order a sample can from My Perfect Color and do any number of things. Paint out the sample and take it to have it matched, ask MPC to be sure to include the formula so you can take it to a BenM store, or just get the sample, test it and if it's right order directly from MPC. Bottom line is just because one Lowe's store can't mix Rock Candy doesn't mean no one can. Here is a link that might be useful: My Perfect Color

Help for Dendrobium Elfin Gem and canaliculatum

About the exposure, I`ve been moving Den. Elfin Charm and Den. canaliculatum around because they are loosing leafs and get eaten by snails. I hope to have solved the latter problem now. Den. Minnie and Den. canaliculatum are mounted and hanging on a basket off the brick wall with eastern exposure. Most of my other Aussie Dendros have the sweet spot on the gate with sun in the early morning/ late evening and always a breeze. Den. Elfin Charm is on the bakers rack. It is probably not quite bright enough but in another couple of weeks I`ll be going on vacation for three weeks and I try to group my plants according to their watering needs to make it easier for the orchid sitter.

Are you ever inclined to make a food sculpture? An over the top decorated cake? You could make a gingerbread treasure chest and decorate or fill with gems. A dragon hoarding gems. Heck, you could even make a crown roast more regal by attaching gems to the bones rather than paper ”panties”. Or you could just put them in a crystal dish for pretty.

Thanks for the great ideas, everyone! I’ll try one in my coffee momentarily. :) Otherwise, they would be great for decorating cookies, cakes, etc. If only it was like the old days and I had a reason to make such a cake, and people around to eat it.

Actually, I wonder if I could use marzipan and royal icing fashioned to hold the ’gems’ as if it were jewelry… necklace strands and rings. or maybe a filigree royal icing tiara, smothered in gems. I need little kids around who would like and eat it. lol!

The key seems to be having someone to eat it. I tried one in a cup of coffee last night and it was just fine -- must stir it a lot to dissolve it, else you'll end up with a small chip of rock candy at the bottom of the cup. Ask me how I know. lol!
