I've seen that leaf.....can't come up with it.

they might not be true leaves... and dont ask me why.. but woodland poppy came to mind.. though i cant verify such with leaf pix ... so basically a WAG .... maybe it will spur someone else on ....

It looks like an aroid of some type.

That leaf looks so familiar, but I can't think what it is. It almost says Arum to me, but I can't place it. If no one identifies it, can you post another picture when it grows more leaves ?

A treasured wild flower....Trillium.

nandina, is that how they look when seedlings? I do have several kinds of trilliums. The fact that the leaflets are irregular is throwing me off.

I've never seen a young Trillium with leaves like that either, and I can't find any pictures of Trillium with those leaves. The plant's leaf texture is Trillium- like, so maybe that's why you're thinking Trillium. 🤔🙄 The only Arum that comes close is Typhonium. Those are used herbally, and are tropical coming from Australasia. Ipomoea hederacea has similar leaves, but the veining is different. The veins make me think possibly Nabalus. It's polymorphic and maybe possible, but I can't find any Nabalus photos that match this either, and usually Nabalus leaves have some serrations, and there are tiny pickles around the leaf margins, which I don't see. We're you growing Typhonium by chance?

Linnea, do you grow Pinellia pedatisecta, or any other Pinellia species? Pinellia pedatisecta is a hardy Asian aroid that looks very similar to our native Green Dragon, Arisaema dracontium.

btw.. take a razor blade.. and slice the bottom edge of that cup to make 3 drain holes.. if you plan on leaving it in that clear plastic cup

Jay, I do have ONE Green Dragon, somewhere in that bed. I bought it as least 3 -4 years ago, and it's easy to overlook it. I can't recall if I've seen it this year. Not really close to where this popped up. But maybe it set seeds, and now I'll have more???

Ken, it's not in a cup, it's in a standard black, 4" nursery pot that has drainage holes. Not sure why it's looking so reflective. And it's wet because it was raining. So no worries.

I think Pinellia pedatisecta is likely correct.

Well, now I know why it looked familiar ! I've only seen two Green Dragon plants growing in the woods, and it's been a long time since I saw them.

Just a warning that the Asian species of Green Dragon, Pinellia pedatisecta is invasive, and is sometimes falsely sold as our native Green Dragon, Arisaema dracontium. The Asian species spreads very quickly, compared to the native species.

I was once given some Pinellia bulbs that were supposed to be Arisaema dracontium. As soon as I saw them flower, I removed them and put them in the trash.

I have seen Pinellia ternata turned loose in a county garden where the offsets went down stream and have become a huge carpet of invasive plants. They are not charming!

That is why I posted about this plant being an aroid.

Pinellia is one of the most pernicious weeds in the gardens at Swarthmore. We have eliminated it from some garden areas, but only by digging out the soil, sifting it through a screen and picking out all the parts of the Pinellia.

Oh, Jeeze- that's what I have. It was given to me as Green Dragon and has gone from one plant 2 years ago to about 30not small seedlings in a season. I'm very glad I read this- thank you for clarifying why this supposed choice plant is so fecund.

The original Green Dragon I have was bought from the Lake County IL Native Plant Sale, run by the Lake County Forest Preserve district about 4 years ago. The vendor supplying the plants was Possibility Place Nursery, a Chicago area native plant dealer.

Next time I’m in that bed (heat wave here, I’m doing the absolute minimum outside), I’ll ferret around and see if I can find the original plant. Hopefully, I have the “right” one!

I've bought plants from Possibility Place. They seem trustworthy. I don't know if they propagate Green Dragon themselves, or get them from another grower? They supply the plants for our Will County native plant sale. The link is great for telling them apart.
