I like what you did very much! I think it actually looks better than before! That's going to be alot of tomatoes! Next year, you might want to add some squash somewhere. I think the huge leaves of squash have just as much landscape beauty as hostas or ornamental rhubarbs. If your weather allows, you could replace some of these plants with Red Russian kales, onions, Red and green lettuces, carrots, etc. in the fall or early next spring. You'll be amazed at how beautiful they are. (I agree that the shrubs are entirely too close to the house, but if you're only there temporarily, they're fine. Have fun. If you decide you may stay more than five years, it would be well worth the effort to extend your beds and move them. Take it one section at a time, maybe a section in the spring, and another in the fall. If you don't wait too long, you shouldn't have to buy any new shrubs...and you can include space for more veg-amentals if you want. )

Actually this property has been in my family for 35years or more I inherited back in 2001 when my dad died. I would never be able to purchase a piece of land like that at the price it would sell for. The house I grew up in which my little brother has is across the street from it. I am only 28 an currently have a house 4 miles away that I own. So there is no set plans on the house this is just my property. Years and years away if any. There are only 13 other houses and it is a private neighborhood. All the houses are built on stilts around the natural florida habitat or wetlands. This would be a requirement if I ever do get to put a house on it. But in the mean time if you have seen the blog then you can see I am a man that fears no seed or plant challenge. So I am doing my homework, reading up on orchids and growing new babies, talking to neighbors and I really want to try to repopulate the neighborhood. I took a little stroll through the neighborhood today and spotted at least 5 other trees from the street that had colonies growing on them. So I am very excited about doing this I love challenges so stay tuned and I will keep you all updated on my future endeavors. Here is a partial shot of the property The Live Oaks must be over 100 years old or more. These trees are all over the neighborhood so there is lots of good spots for the orchids to grow. And the other shot is one of the other colonies I saw today. It has almost wrapped around the trees limb completely. dibbit, i'm glad you looked up about the mayapples! here i was, thinking i'd ingested something horribly toxic as a kid. (sort of like the folks who grew up eating fiddle heads, only to discover in the past few yrs one of the main types is pretty carcinogenic). we never ate many of them- they are pretty sour, like sourweed/grass (oxalis), so i never discovered the laxative part. lol. but they are good. wouldn't be surprised if the foliage is poisonous, though. they have pretty white flowers in april, too. and yes, they do go dormant pretty quickly. mine are usually gone by june. rather than rounding them up, if you really don't want to live with them, please consider looking up ncnps. someone will be happy to come and get them. i think they look like fairy parasols. i still think the 'grass' is river cane or switch cane. it needs really ideal conditions to get big, and i often see it growing at only a couple feet high. it gets taller in the woods near creeks than in the sun or an open area. they are in the grass family, which is why it may appear as grass. if the stems are woody, though, i'd lay money it's one of the arundinarias. japanese stilt grass isn't up yet, and it doesn't get woody stems anyhow. if you mowed it off repeatedly, eventually the roots would starve and stop trying to grow the canes. probably take quite a while, though- boos are pernicious.

Very nice photos :o) I'm not good at identification with no books for reference but yes, #3 Garlic Mustard HAS TO GO... it is an EXTREMELY prolific alien invasive weed very difficult to control once it gets a foothold. This time of year it is easy to see from it's upright growth and flowers atop. Pull them from the lowest point possible. There is a "nub" at the base of the stem and if you get your fingers just below that nub the whole plant will come out roots and all. These things sew zillions of seeds so it's best to get them out now before the flowers go to seed. #4 & #27 are Jacks. Young jacks DO look like trilliums. #15 looks like very young jacks. #9 & #12 do look like Arrowood viburnum to me as well. #10 looked like false solomon's seal to me (thought I saw a flower bud at the distal end of the stalk. Did they flower underneath? #11 looks like a "cornus" (dogwood) species 14 is definitely real sololmon's seal by the flowers falling under the stalk. #19 and #22 both appear to be Sensitive Fern #26 Looks like plants I have in my window "Hawkweed". Mine are orange but there is also yellow. I like these very much but they aren't native here. I have them planted in the window boxes of my shed, in window planters on my house and in my front garden. #33. Wild violets as everyone else has said. Good luck with your identifications :o) Barb
