Friday Night Music - Clothes & Image
Comments (61)I've been thinking of what some of my favorite musicians said about "image". Joe Strummer, from (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais . "...Punk rockers in the UK, They won't notice anyway .They're all too busy fighting For a good place under the lighting. The new groups are not concerned With what there is to be learned. They got Burton suits, ha, you think it's funny Turning rebellion into money..." And David Bowie's demo of Candidate (not the Diamond Dogs version) "...I make it a thing, when I'm all alone to relieve myself. I make it a thing, when I gazelle on stage, to believe in myself. I make it a thing, to glance in window panes and feel pleased with myself. Yeah, and pretend I'm walking home..." I could have used Bowie's self-confidence building techniques when Diamond Dogs first came out (1974). Punk rock saved me, to me is wasn't fashion, it was attitude (1977)....See MoreFriday Night Music - The World & Places In It
Comments (48)"Elmer, there used to be The Ian Tyson Show on CTV in Canada. He and Sylvia fronted a band called The Great Speckled Bird." Yes, I know. I'm a longtime fan of their work as I&S. His treatment of her and minimization of her contributions throughout are disgusting. Among other things, she complained and tired of his lack of interest in sharing lead singing parts equally with her. I'm no fan of his (as an individual or as a performer) at all. As I recall, he grew up in Western Canada and was drawn toward country music at some point along the way. I've read John Einarson's book (that they both collaborated on) and if I recall correctly, Ian's tendencies toward infidelity ended their relationship. I've seen Sylvia perform live several times and enjoyed her performances very much....See MoreFRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC - Friday Night At The Movies Part 2
Comments (44)A cool bit of trivial for the MASH theme, Suicide is Painless, that I learned from Wiki a few years ago. The film's director, Robert Altman, tried to write a lyric to go with the Johnny Mandel music but got stuck. He asked his teenage son to give it a crack and he came up with something in less than 10 minutes. The second interesting tidbit about this is that his son made more money from his share of the writing royalties from use and sales than Dad made from directing the movie....See MoreFNM Friday Night Music: Halloween/Fright Night IV
Comments (26)As many times as I've heard "Mack the Knife" from the 1960s on, I never suspected that it was about murder or that Mack was a murderer, and I did not know that the lyrics were taken from Bertold Brecht's Die Dreigroschenoper, which I have both read and seen. I always thought "mack" was something you were supposed to do to a knife, similar to stropping. Now I'll never hear that song the same way again! Thanks, I guess👿 Here's a silly song, from the 1950s, I think: Not a great song, but on topic. I think that there are a lot of songs here that don't fit into other themes (so far), and I do like this time of year. Parties in San Francisco would start almost two weeks before Halloween when I lived there in the 1970s-80s, although in the late 1960s, New Year's Eve was the most popular holiday there, and that's when the best concerts used to happen....See More- 5 years ago
