Stair Tread refinishing - Dust/Paint on sides of Treads

I hired a company to refinish my pine stairs up to my 3rd floor. Unfortunately the work isn’t up to my standards and I’m trying to figure out where to go from here. I’d like to fix it myself if possible.

For awareness they removed carpet, sanded and stained treads, put 2x coats of poly, and painted risers.

Let me know if you have ideas on what I can do to fix it to make it look cleaner. A few ideas I came up with, but I’m open to others:

  1. Apply a gel stain to match along the edges and touch up paint on strings
  2. Caulk sides and by riser of tread and paint to match
  3. Start over - sand treads down, stain, and coat with poly
  4. Replace pine treads with oak, because pine doesn’t take stain well

What other options do I have? I put a laminate on the landing and we stained the stairs to match that.
