Paint on the stairs doesn't wear well - I'd stick with the stain - I'm wondering why you painted the handrail black?

I will be staining the stairs. I’m trying to decide between staining them to match the floors or dark to match the railings. I painted the railings black to give a more contemporary/sophisticated look to the stairs. I’m very happy with that choice.

I think keeping the treads to match the wood floors would be the best option.

I did ebony floors in 2 of my homes. 2-3 coats of minwax ebony...not everyone likes very dark floors, however I find them just as easy and far more contemporary, First house I did them in was built in 1920, had high ceilings and 23 windows on the main floor, so huge amount of light. The ebony really grounded my rugs and furniture and allowed them to pop.

I like your black hand rail, which I'm assuming you are going to back up with additional black accents elsewhere. The runner could have integrated black, for example, but black framed art work, light fixtures, etc. are also good choices for additional accents.

The big reason NOT to do black stair treads is that they will show every. speck. of. dust. Plus, matching the stair treads to the floor is the classic, most flexible (as opposed to "safe") choice.

I have added black accents...both art and light fixtures. I was wondering whether the black would show every drop of dirt/dust. I definitely don’t want that. Thanks! I really appreciate the input!

Matching the floors is probably the best option. Also consider that dark flooring = every speck of dust, dog hair, etc, showing up more.

I love black stairs. I say go for it.

I like strong design usually, but man, that last pic? What do those people do, hop out of bed in the morning, run down the stairs, blow a whistle and yell "Offensive pass interference, the ball will be placed at the spot of the foul. Automatic, first down!"
