After living in Florida for over 30 years, I've had my fair share of hurricane anxiety.

Hope you all are prepared and have gas, money, water etc.

Don't forget to turn down fridge/freezer. Put water bottles in freezer.

Fill the bathtub so you can "flush"

Charge everything up.

Fortunately we have a whole house generator so we're good to go....

Hope every is safe and sound tonight. We just have crazy winds here right now but not expecting anything worse. Daughter got home safe for spring break-got out of Oxford shortly before they had tornado sirens go off. Hope everyone is ok.

Bernd, the trick to getting a snow blower to go through very high snow is to- First slug through and get one pathway through the snow. Once this initial path is in take swaths only 1/4 the width of the snow blower. This way the auger on the blower can handle the amount of snow going in and will eat right through very deep snow. When you try to gobble through a whole width (in my case 24 inches) it is too much and you end up trying to plow the snow rather than feeding it into the auger and discharging it. I had over 2 feet and by taking about 6 inch 'cuts' off the edge it ate right through the snow and sent it flying. The first pass is rough and requires a lot of back and forth to get it through. You also need a 2 stage blower, single stages cannot handle any heavy loads. Electric snow blowers are only good for very, very light snows (useless, in my opinion). I had to rescue my next door neighbors who have an electric blower; trying to be 'green' It could not touch the heavy snow we had and they were having a horrible time trying to shovel out......like a good neighbor, I was there to bail them out with my carbon dioxide breathing, snow eating machine. Glad to hear that everyone seems to be safe. Around here, we are far enough inland that we didn't expect to be hard hit, but it ended up being pretty mild. Lots of rain, but that was about it. Our power stayed on. Some stuff I intended to bring in off the deck, but forgot, didn't move an inch. We decided to go out and run some errands this afternoon. The storm was past and the skies were sunny and clear. The only damage I saw was the next door neighbor's FOR SALE sign on her house was hanging from only one of the 2 hooks that holds it up, and a rather large tree branch was down. I know in harder hit areas there are some deaths, lots of flooding, and millions without power. I'm just glad it wasn't worse. Casey

I remember Isabel a few years ago - I had just moved into my house and boy did she pack a punch. With all the talk about Hanna, I prepared so as not to have missiles flying around by yard, or the wind ripping up my shed like before. In the end, just had a lot of rain and some periodic heavy winds. The worst was the humidity. It can get pretty humid in MD, but Hanna brought some pretty soupy air. It is wonderul here now. Prayers in order I guess for those in Ike's path - whew, what a season already!! Thanks for your thoughts.

I’m right on the border of where maps are split between tropical storm and hurricane. The worst of it should be around 8-10am. There are a couple big trees that always make me nervous. More nervous for my sister and her new waterfront Hamptons house. She’s technically not in a flood zone but her next door neighbors are.

We place water bottles in our extra freezer (empty juice 1/2 gal containers). When the power goes out I'll place 2-3 of these ice blocks in our refrigerators. It'll save me some time before getting the generator ready and can keep the fridges cold like an ice chest for a day. This is basically how an "icebox" worked in the ol' daze.

Charging devices and filling water containments. Several categories: potable for me. potable for my chickens and quail. washable. Flushable. The chickens mostly will get the water runoff from their coops' metal roofing.

Keep plenty of D and AA batteries around. Car is nearly full of gas. Disposable plastic gloves were useful for me back on several occasions in 2011 when we got slammed with Hurricane Irene, followed by "Snowmaggedeon". I got to grill chicken dinners and keep my hands clean without running a bunch of water.

My freezers are totally full.

Latest update shows landfall at the CT/RI border so those to the east will be getting the worst winds, those to the west the worst rain. We will probably get around 6" or so of rain is my best guest but sustained winds in the 20-30 mph range so not too bad, but nasty and could easily take trees down when the ground is soaked and they're loaded with leaves. So I suspect we'll lose power somewhere along the line. But right now, it's dry and calm but cloudy.

Raining hard in bands on outer Cape but not too much wind yet. Storm surge is going to be the biggest problem at high tide. We're ready if we lose power but really keeping our fingers crossed .that it doesn't happen.

All of the tourists left yesterday after depleting our gasoline stations of fuel and then sitting in their cars for hours to cross the bridges, but we only got 1/2" of rain. No wind damage or power outages. We were lucky.
