Why does the store play music from my playlist?

I signed up for Apple Music several months ago. Lately when I spend some time at Lowes, I hear the exact songs that are on my playlist.

It seems like more than a coincidence. Do the store systems subscribe to a service that detects my phone in the store and match up the music? (To keep me in the store longer? As if that’s not going to happen anyway.)

Some of the songs are pretty old. Most were hits though. Could be an demographics algorithm.

It doesn’t really bother me. I have not been able to find any info on the web about it. Does anyone here know what could be going on?

I don’t shop enough to know if this happens in other stores.

LL, 95% of my music is in mp3 format and some are left in the reg, they all play when they are in itunes folder. You don't have to convert them I did because I put them on an IPod and because I would burn them to a cd for the car and I could get 22 songs on the CD instead of 10 or 12. I convert them to MP3 by using Roxio, but other software will do it also. I make a playlist in Itunes...under file, "new",name it, then copy and past the songs from my music folders to the playlists in ITunes. It may take some practice. I have a playlist for my favorite songs. When I hear one I really like, I copy and paste it in favorites. It will then be in my favorites and in songs. If I had it to do over I would copy and paste them straight to the playlist and they automatically goes to "songs". I had a lot of duplicates leaning how to do this. If I want to listen to one particular singer or all songs I click on the right option and I set the controls to random. You can delete any songs from the playlists. It will ask "from the computer or just the folder". I would suggest when you get this set up like you want it back the music folders so you don't have to do this all again. If you buy a new computer and need to install Itunes again it will/should install with your folders just like they were. Aren't computers wonderful? I don't travel any more and don't need an ipod so I bought a radio with an ipod dock and can listen to a thousand songs in random if I want. The radio is a Memorex and sounds as good as my Bose. Very nice. I love music, I call it therapy for the soul. My taste in music has changed over the years, I love some of all music.

How are you sure it is Itunes that is removing your music? I have an older computer with XP that does have Itunes and I have never lost any music on it. I also have a two month old laptop with Vista that never has had Itunes installed. I ripped 2 CD's with music a few days ago on the laptop. The music was OK for a couple days and now all that is there is the folders where the music was. When I open them, there is no music in them. Both computers have CCleaner and I use it daily to keep things running better.

Why is my stored garlic sprouting?

I store my garlic in the kitchen which though a bit cooler than some other rooms is never less than about 60-65. My hardnecks store quite well into the new year, but then they are never cooled except those that get replanted, and then only after they are in the ground. I get few garlics sprouting in storage, but I do get some dried up cloves, even then not all the cloves in most bulbs dry out either. I was able to find enough good cloves in one hardneck variety to plant a decent bed last June from a preceding late July harvest. Although most of the cloves had dried out (no bulb was 100% good, although most had 1 or 2 good still well plumped cloves), I still got a 100% stand of those that hadn't dried out. I think it is too much cool or cold during storage that triggers premature sprouting. I have the best luck storing my well cured garlic warm (room temperature) rather than cool.

Thank you all so much! I found Burnaware very easy to use, and so far, the sound quality seems quite good--not that I would be able to appreciate the finer points of it when driving on the freeway, but I know I'm going to enjoy this. To my disgust, I did find that many of the songs I have in iTunes (ALL of which I have either ripped from disks I bought myself or bought from iTunes over the years!) have been converted to MPEG-4 (.m4p), "protected," and cannot be dragged into the playlist window for Burnaware. Perhaps I have just been looking in the wrong folders or something, but I have to take time to go over them all and figure out which ones have been rendered inaccessible, and, possibly, why. (Maybe if I rip them back off of the CDs I burned using iTunes in the good old days when it all worked simply and easily, they will change into files I CAN drag into Burnaware. That would be a great nuisance to handle, but worth the trouble in the end. Anyway, I will report back here if I can figure things out. While looking for a music playing app in the Microsoft store, though I wasn't aware of clicking on anything, Groove Music showed up on my PC, and I liked it, so I installed that, too. But, of course, it doesn't help with creating playlists to burn. Has anyone else experienced what I have with iTunes putting songs out of commission, so to speak? I will also try Richard's suggestion to try burning very slowly. By the way, until I came directly to this site tonight, I didn't know I had answers here because Houzz didn't notify me. Has something changed. Any ideas what I can do to fix it? Feeling much happier tonight than I was a couple of days ago, thanks to you all.

You know, there is some interesting verbiage in the Apple Music terms of use that talks about data sharing.

Last time, I just went into Lowes for a quick return and there was Gaga. That was a bit different than the previous genres, but still on my playlists.

I haven’t noticed the coincidence in other stores yet.

I am in the tech field. We tend to think ahead of our time, and well, this seems like an obvious progression to get people to spend more time in the store. Funny how it doesn’t get more press. Marketing techniques like music in stores used to get more press.

Now that I think about it, I have been told that Lowes has emphasized visual merchandising in their stores to appeal to certain audiences. I haven’t done my own research on it yet, but it would be interesting to know more. This person made it sound like they were doing some new and innovative marketing in this area.

An aside, Apple seems to add tunes and artists to my downloads without my allowing it. I haven’t taken the time to figure that one out either. It could be related to collaborations with other artists that I’ve downloaded, or maybe AI induced. I turned off data access to automatic downloads and I don’t have wifi. Another mystery.

Then to be an effective technique, all of the customers in the store at the same time with custom Apple Music playlists would be "time-shared" by the system? Or would the biggest Lowes spender among those customers get all the playtime?

So, when I asked about it, a Lowes associate said they play the same music all the time. I have trouble believing that.

I also noticed it recently in Home Depot and maybe Walmart. Although now Walmart seems to have it’s own radio station or something with talking (which is really distracting when you are tring to choose a product on the shelf).

It could be that there are not very many Apple Music subscribers in my area. And I tend to go shopping when there are few people in the store.

I’m feeling a little guilty if the Lowes playlist gets stuck on my music preferences though.

I suspect there are companies out there aggregating data and using it to choose music for store play.
