Don't make big decisions in August, maybe
Comments (1)YES! For at least some parts of my garden, I have long since decided that July and August are simply a difficult time I have to get my plants through so I can enjoy them the rest of the year. For me this is most true in my north-facing front yard, which the house shadow has already put back in full shade as the sun rides lower in the sky, but which is in full sun for the summer. I will say that as a rabid plant collector with a bit of a soft heart, if I can make a decision to get rid of an underperforming plant in August, it is best that I act on it right away before the plant recovers in fall and I lose my nerve. It's not like I have an excess of space here....See MoreMaking final decisions... having a hard time - any advice??
Comments (7)R/F: I'm partial to SZ, having had great performance with multiple units (in multiple houses) over many years, & have SZ in our new kitchen. Beverage Center: have you looked at the Monogram one? Great looking & racked well. We ultimately went with Monogram refrigerator drawers because we wanted food storage capability too. Beverage centers don't get cold enough to safely store food. Range: I was impressed with Monogram, never could see a BlueStar in our area. Both the Monogram & the BlueStar have the power you need, so the slow simmer should be your main decider. If both are satisfactory to you, then it's down to your decision between electric or gas oven. (We chose a DCS all gas 36" range, all burners, because of our wiring and we also have an electric wall oven. It can do low simmer without a diffuser. The infrared broiler in our range is more important to us than the lack of self-cleaning, and the oven can switch to convection.) DW: We've had KitchenAid & it's good, much better than the JennAir it replaced. We have Miele now, which cleans better than our KA and is much quieter. Faucet: We have KWC Domo & love it. We have the side control pullout version on our main sink, and the top control pullout version on our prep sink. Microwave: I'd prefer a drawer in an island....See MoreBIG decision to make...
Comments (20)God bless you, Amber. I have 5 myself. (15, 14, 12, 11 and 9). A 3 year old is a BIG responsibility. Not that an older child is NOT but at 3, they obviously need a lot more attention and overview than a 13 year old would, who could perhaps make their own sandwich for lunch, for example. I have to agree though...what's one more? It would be a huge adjustment at first but I'm sure you would have no regrets in the long run. The child does deserve a stable life...but just to be sure, is BM unstable? I realize that she is virtually homeless at the moment and is living with Dad but that is really not an immediate reason to assume custody. Is she neglectful? On drugs, maybe? Not a good mother? Is she abusive? I'm not trying to stand up for her, but I'm just trying to understand why there is a sudden interest in taking custody of the child. If she is a good parent to the child but is going through a difficult time at the moment with coming to the end of a relationship, that isn't really an immediate cause for trying to take custody, I think. Knowing me, I've probably overlooked an explanation above somewhere...if I have and the woman is NOT a good parent, I would be 100% supportive of my DH going for custody of the child...but remember that we can't always go by the ex-boyfriend's thoughts right away. I mean, they DO have a dog in the fight and will usually only tell one side of the story. Perhaps a welfare check to her Dad's house is in order?...See Moreapropos article in NY Times:Do we have decision fatique?
Comments (12)Thank you very much for posting this. This did make me feel less crazy and it is reassuring that there is a name for what we're experiencing/it is a measurable phenomenon. (And the fact that you need to keep your glucose up to fuel your brain to make more sound decisions does explain the frequent-have a glass of wine/eat some chocolate advice that seems to go hand in hand with renovation!) The part about prisoners being more likely to get parole based on the earlier they were seen in the day by the judge is really frightening. It was safer for the fatigued judges to make no decision-deny parole-for the exact same crimes they'd pardoned in the morning! So much for our justice system. The part about car dealerships front loading a bunch of unimportant cheaper items in their options package and then hitting you at the end with the big ticket items (to the tune of on average an extra $2k in that one study) was also fascinating, but not surprising. And think about the soundness of ER docs making decisions near the tail end of the long shifts they work......See MoreToronto Veterinarian
