I kind of like the Saltbox look of your home without the shutters. Pick a nice paint color like a deep gray-green or a deep marine blue for the siding with a bright color for the front door. After that I'd pare back the huge shrubs in the front which are overgrown. Or maybe replace the large one to the left with hydrangea or other flowering shrubs.

I might even plant flower borders along the front stair path.

If it were mine I would rethink the landscape & hardscape. It appears that your yard is a good candidate for some terracing & removal ( or reduction in size ): of the large shrubs blocking the view to your house & entry.

I agree with K Laurence. the landscaping needs addressing. The house is good with or without shutters, Choose a color unique to you, different from any others in the neighborhood. I would work on terracing. Get a Lanscape architect to draw up a plan to incorporate in stages.

I think your house looks better with the shutters. But I would paint them a dark green. The black looks harsh to my eye. Paint the garage door the same green.

You might want to fill in with siding where the window was closed up.

Relocate the weeping tree, looks like a redbud, to the yard. Reduce the height of the other bushes to below the window sill.

May be some portico above front door? Shutters seems are properly sized.

I like your idea. A dark blue with ivory trim works. Our house and barn were those colors and I loved them. Doors on the house were mahogany, but you can decide that later. I would start out removing the shutters, then see if you want them back on after the paint job. We used BM River Blue. It has a touch of green, but Hale Navy and pure white trim are also a gorgeous combination.
