Genie Magnolia Help

In the early spring I planted a bareroot Genie Magnolia. It slowly put out about 15 leaves. suddenly in late July leaves turned yellow and started dropping. I water it regularly, lately a little every day in the extreme heat. It was getting 5 hours of direct light but now about 3 plus dappled because of a larger tree. Any thoughts on whats happening? Too little water? Too much water? Not enough light? should I try to move it? It has a couple new shoots but no new leaves.

with the soil looking that dry i suspect you arent watering deeply enough.. into the gob planted.. to get water down thru the root mass ...

put a hose on a trickle and let it run for a few hours ... build a little moat if it just runs away ...

and add a 3 to 4 foot ring of mulch around it.. to maintain the moisture you finally get down there ...

advise if you have non draining bad soil ...

btw.. how are you currently watering ???

even better.. take a hand trowel.. and dig a couple 3 to 6 inch holes in the gob planted.. and in native soil.. and FIND out if there is any moisture down at root level.. maybe do that first.. lol

where in teh world did youget a bare root plant that large???

throw in location.. big city name also ...

it is severely stressed.. moving it is only more stress ...

Thank you for your advice. I'm in Brooklyn, NY. I've been watering it with a hose on shower everyday lately, filling the recessed root area which has leaf mulch at the base. Maybe it's not enough. I was worried the roots would get too wet and have issues if I watered it more. I noticed the leaves turning yellow around the time temperatures started to soar, high 90s, and at the same time the city tree expanded its canopy and blocked more of our yard's light. I tested the PH and looked for critters. Neither of those seem to be an issue. The light I can't control, but I'm trying your trick of leaving the hose on trickle. Much appreciated.

Your plant can be grown as a small tree or a shrub; it's up to you which form you prefer. As you guessed (and saw) removal of competing leaders (and future suckers) would be necessary IF you decide to grow your plant as a single-trunked tree (which is likely what I'd do with it). As Ken suggests, I'd plant it and wait to start pruning. Actually, I'd plant it now and probably remove the other leader this coming spring (which is sooner than Ken suggests). Ken is not wrong in suggesting that you wait until your plant becomes established, but, since it's a potted plant (so has all of it's roots present) and is small, I don't think you'll have any problem going ahead and totally "correcting" your tree's form this coming spring.

Thanks Don... After I made the post, I was doing more reading and found out there was a Force adjustment I can adjust. I decided to give it a try, but never got the chance. The next day, the I went to test the door again, before making the Force adjustment. Well, it's been working ever since... I hope it keeps working, but I'm thinking it's working because the temp had warmed up... It hasn't been getting below 50F, even at night. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it keeps working, but if it doesn't, I'm hoping a 1/4 turn on the "Open Force" adjustment will do the trick. That seems to have fixed the problem with others that had similar problems when it was related to cold weather. Thanks again for your suggestions!!

'Genie' is a dwarf only in comparison with other magnolias. Most sources list the 10 year height as 12 to 15 feet. It ought to be fine in a pot, however, for a couple of years. The biggest problem will be protecting it in the winter. Any plant in a container is much more vulnerable to root damage/death from cold than it would be in the ground. You will have to find some way to insulate the pot once the tree goes dormant. Wrapping with fiberglass insulation followed by plastic for protection from wetness is one possibility. Storing in a basement or garage that does not go too far below freezing is another. How possible either of these suggestions are in an apatment complex is another question entirely.
