Where is your cats litter box and all their stuff?
Comments (28)I have two cats, one litter box, and it stays tucked in the far back corner of the laundry room. It's behind a chest, so it's not seen from outside of the room. Extra supplies are located in two wicker baskets in the coat closet outside the laundry room. The scooper stays propped up under the sink and I have plastic grocery sacks to scoop into and tie up. Toss those in small garbage can under that sink.. Which gets dumped daily when kitchen garbage goes out (or sooner if needed). My main reason for posting it to tell everyone about the litterbox system my DS turned me onto. The Breeze system by Tidycats. He had told me about it and quite frankly I was hesitant. But last fall, he and his GF brought me one of his cats (he has another one and she had a kitten, so three was too many). They brought their kitten down too and a litter box. NO dust. Cost less than regular scooping/clumping litter. No worries about lung cancer from breathing in more cat litter dust (for the last 30 years). No tiny bits of litter all over the floor, in the laundry room, etc. Of course his cat already liked the system. Boo was 5yo when I switched over. No problems. I removed the old box (clumping litter mixed with a bag of new litter) in a week. fyi, I put in 2 bags of litter each time I switch it all out (once a month) instead of the suggested 1 bag of litter. Boo likes to dig and 1 just seems rather thin to me. A 3 pack of pads (which I really thought was going to be the worse part of the system, but they are so good) last depending on how many cats are using the box. 1 change of pad per cat per week. So 2 cats = 2 changes per week. The litter box is slopped above the pads, so pee goes onto the pad - no accidents. Even if you forget to change the pad on time. Holds massive amounts. No smell from pad (actually smells better now than when they used regular litter, imo) but I do keep a solid deodorizer on the floor next to chest just in case. The only negative, #2 is harder for them to cover up (if they want to cover it up) but I'm home and hear them digging (it is louder than regular litter) and usually get it out asap anyway. DD2 and DS work, so they only clean out when they get home/before they go out and their cats are ok with it. I ordered DD2 and me each a system. Three of her friends have switched over. Two of mine have. DD2 and DS both have 2 cats, 1 system. But if 3 cats, I would def get 2 systems. I originally went on a hunt for "best price" as I always do. At that time, PetCo was having an awesome sale and no shipping - even on cat litter, which is really unheard of. I ordered so much Petco called to see if I had really ordered that much. lol If not on sale w/free shipping, I buy the supplies at Wal-Mart. Less than Pet Supplies Plus, even with their "club card" percentage refund of each purchases. DS lives in downtown Chicago and usually orders his from a place on Amazon. Target was not carrying last time I looked and he doesn't have a WM close by. Here is a link that might be useful: Breeze Litter System for Cats...See MoreHELP! Comments (11)Get a covered litter box, and put it in the corner with the opening facing the wall (with a little space between). Most cats can maneuver in or climb over the top, but dogs will have a harder time (quietly) sneaking in. You could also try converting a big plastic storage tub into a litter box - cutting a hole big enough for the cat in the lid created tops access, which makes it much harder for the dog to get in to. I also have a baby gate with a small cat door in it that I use to block my dogs - I had to zip tie the little door half way shut so the cats could get through, but the dogs couldn't squeeze in because it's obviously designed with a very fat cat in mind! Comments (8)We've had him since he was three months. He came to us in May and was ok until we attempted to make a litter change. We changed back but he continued the behavior. We actually do think that the Prozac is helping. This was happening multiple times per day, now it's not always every day. We are using the unscented So Phresh. He's known the other cats since birth. We did bring two home after him, but he had been with them previously. There was a bit of tension with the introduction, but all was good after 24 hrs. That was in June and this started in Aug. We haven't noticed any signs of tension and we've been looking for it. They all play together and interact. He usually poops/pees near a box and pretty close to a wall. We've never found it just out in the middle of the floor. A few times he's used more random spots, but always near a wall. We have boxes in multiple places in the house. We actually think that he's gotten it into his head that the floor is an ok substitute, which is why we were hoping that the retraining would work. And it did - while he was in the bathroom. I think it's very interesting that he found the spot on the floor where the towels had come apart and used that, not the towel. I taped them together last night. It seems random and I think that is the most puzzling and frustrating part for us and the vets. Sometimes he poops on the floor but doesn't pee, sometimes the opposite, sometimes he'll use the litter box consistently for more than 24 hours. We haven't been able to figure out the trigger for the times when he doesn't use it....See MoreKitty litter boxes & cleaning
Comments (29)I know I started off this thread asking how often you clean your litter area, but I wanted to come back and update on the litter box. It was time for new ones. I looked at all the suggestions here and the measurements were too similar or exactly what I already had. (I wish they wouldn't slant the insides of most boxes!) Reviewers of the The Nature's Miracle ones were commenting how the plastic is now flimsy and the top breaks when changing litter. I still almost ordered the corner one because it was at least a litter wider than what I had. After doing a little more reseach I settled on this big mamma jamma. Meet the Petmate Giant Litter Pan. Petmate Lots of review photos, but someone submitted one with their five year old kid in the box to demonstrate the size! My child also fit in the box and was happy to test it out. :) People mentioned the photos just don't do it justice and they were surprised how large it was in real life. I found that to be true. I do wish the front wasn't curved and I'm not sure what I'll use the sides for. Perhaps a container of disinfectant wipes. The side areas are much wider and deeper than I expected as well. The plastic has Microban antimicrobial protection and is nice and thick. Even though the sides don't look like it from photos, they're high. The inside is shiny because I sprayed non-stick litter spray inside. (OT note - Walls aren't black they're BM Caponata.) I didn't buy one of those washer pans for underneath. I figure if pee does end up out of the box, whether floor or pan, I'll have to clean it up either way. I do want to get a new scatter mat. I saw a few that looked promising on Amazon. For now I put a puppy pad underneath. I see on the packaging it says there's 'built-in attractant' soooooo.... hopefully that's not an issue. Dogs and cats are different. I'll find out. I was going to order a washable one, but liked the idea of disposable in this case. Happy with my Litter Champ too. Love that the scoop hooks to the side and doesn't touch anything!...See MoreMichaela Keller
