#1 YOU can't paint it--and have it last. You could have it sent out/sprayed but the cost involved means you may as well replace your cabinets.

#2 White/wood is all personal choice. The white kitchens I find the most appealing have to the ceiling cupboards with tall crown molding and other architectural detail. The plainer the door profile the more 'apartment' grade I think white looks.

#3 With your expansive space and white walls..I think you need the color and warmth the wood gives you but again that's a personal preference.

#4 I say this because mine is very similar, some may say the back splash could be updated and is the element that sticks out the most in your space, as needs improvement.

I would paint the walls a cleaner white and get rid of the backsplash first.

Leave them the way they are. You have a beautiful kitchen. All it needs is color accents, when you move in, so it has your personality. Right now, it looks big and empty, because it is.

I agree with not painting but I do think the backsplash dates it

Until you do a full remodel (which isn’t necessary...) I’d leave the cabinets.
Change the backsplash if you can.
I’d take the backsplash to the ceiling.

....

And change the lighting

....

When you can redo the kitchen I’d consider adding some upper cabinets to fill the void.
Even if you paint the uppers and add new on top of that ...

You'd be fools to paint those lovely cabinets. Just get a better backsplash, and find a nice paint color that complements the cabinetry.

I am also team no paint. Light wood is trending again so I would just paint the walls and add a colorful runner and rug in the dining area. I would add color with paint and not just go white, gray or beige. Gray might work for you I am just not a fan. Farrow and Ball Borrowed Light or Cooking Apple Green?

I had wooden cabinets at my last house and I hated them. BUT they were a very dated deep orangey oak and the countertops were beige laminate, no backsplash, laminate tile floors so the whole room was a mess. For you though these cabinets are actually beautiful! I love them as is. The only thing I'd consider is maybe switching the hardware (personally I love matte black handles on lighter wood cabinets ) and update the backsplash. New lighting and a nice runner rug and other decorative additions to show your personality more and I think it's wonderful as is.

Thank you everyone. You all convinced me to keep the cabinet as is and not to paint them. They are of great quality and so the cost of having them replaced or sprayed by professional would not make sense. Can you please recommend some backsplash for this space as many of you mentioned it might help? Many thanks to all for taking the time and replying!

Also I plan to replace the lighting as some of you suggested, would be grateful for any suggestions for lighting as well. I was thinking of repainting the gold to bronze as I liked the simple design and shape but not really sure.

Honestly, the backsplash is expensive to replace. You have quite a lot of it. I dont think it looks bad as it is. I would repaint the walls, and leave it alone. It is something you can do later. You have just bought the house. You may encounter other expenses, that are necessary to do, other than a perfectly good, nicely done backsplash. It is always best to live with things, for 6 months to a yr, before changing things permanently, if they are not in immediate need of redoing. What you think you want now, will no doubt, be something you dont want in 6 months or a yr. A house needs to be lived in, to tell you what it needs and what you need. I would probably paint the walls a light color, like a light mint green, or a very light aqua, and get moved in, and get some accessories around here and there. I am betting, you wont even notice that you dont have a new backsplash. It really is fine, and well done, and not to the point where you really need to sink a couple thousand dollars into it to change it. I would maybe replace the lighting. Looks like only one hanging fixture and rest are can lights? I wouldnt paint the knobs, but, would spend the money to replace them, with either the bronze, or black. My preference would be black, and black in the light fixture. Make sure all your bulbs are daylight type led. My preference 4000 to 5000 but, that may be too cool for you. Nothing less than 2700 -3000 though. Put any money you spend, into things, you actually need, not what you think you might want, because, its all new and you are excited to get everything perfect.

I would upgrade the backsplash. Start a new thread with a close up of the granite.

@cat_ky thank you. I think I will take your advice and hold on for a few months before making any drastic changes to the backsplash. The backsplash looks good in person and definitely something we can live with for the time being.

Oh, I think that you should not do this, white surfaces get dirty very easily. If you have children or pets, you especially can not paint your kitchen white! Personally, it seems to me that it would be much better if you painted your kitchen, but is white really suitable? I think it's better for you to use good house painting services so that they will tell you how to paint your kitchen better. Maybe even hire a designer? You still have many years to live in this house. It is always necessary to make such decisions very carefully and thoughtfully, you can also try to color the photo in Photoshop and present your kitchen in a certain color. I wonder if you could paint only the black diamond tiles in the backsplash in a color that matches the adjacent field tile - that’s the only thing that would make me batty with the kitchen. Might work or be a temp fix until you could redo the whole splash.

@Think design live. That’s an excellent suggestion, and I would match the color of the rest of the tile. That would look far more contemporary and simplify the whole thing!

The black in the backsplash is the only little shot of style and originality in the kitchen…i would live with that for a while…black hardware and stools will give it a little more credibility …plus a little needed contrast on the field of all the pretty wood color…

Also …painting tile…trying to match the other tile…is tougher than it sounds…with the added problem that paint on tile is likely to scratch off

Personally I wouldn’t qualify the backsplash dated …more as “unique”
