First, I hope all is well with your child. Rightfully it is hard to think about furniture when you are dealing with something so major in your family life. YUM! I love the color of your new upholstered pieces, the wall color, and the whole architectural vibe of your lovely home. I have kind of skimmed through the other comments, so if I am repeating things already suggested (and perhaps rejected), I apologize. Part of the reason I think the room feels a bit cold is because of the lighting. Almost all of it is in the corners of the room, not near the seating to create warmth where people will be. I would also ask if you have considered trying the sunroom rug in here, and putting the LR rug in the sunroom? I think the light background would lighten the feel of the space, but also work with the dark walls, particularly since it appears that the rug has black in it (or a very dark navy, which would also work in the room). I would take down the artwork that is on either side of the doorway behind the open french doors. It doesn't allow for nice viewing of the art, and really doesn't compliment the doors, either. They are actually a bit of architectural detail as they sit open in front of those end walls. Take the floor lamp out of the corner, and use it next to the wood chair - ideally between the chair and the couch if you can. Turn the small cabinet against the wall that has the small shelves, making it a part of that vignette, and put the small lamp on there that is currently on top of the tall bookcase near the sunroom, so it will tuck on the left side of the cabinet under the shelves. The lamp that is there now, (which appears to be another of the same floor lamps as the one on the other side of the doorway) can move to the other end of the room. Take the two pieces of art that were behind the french doors and stack them on the wall to the right of the small shelves. Angle the armoire into the corner. Sitting flat on the end wall feels crowded. Move the lamp on the bookcase to the small cabinet, as mentioned, and hang the clock that is on the shelf above the bookcase. It is light, and will add some reflection and sparkle up there. Move the collection of silver candlesticks from the brass table to the shelf where the clock was. I like the chair and ottoman to the left of the couch, at the side of the room that opens into the sunroom. I think it blocks the view of the radiator beyond, and makes the overall look much nicer. Try to find a way to add the other floor lamp here. I think your drapes are pretty, but the rods need to move out further on each side of the windows. The drapes shouldn't be angled, but hang straight, and they look skimpy pushed so close in on the window. I do agree, tho, that I would rather see something with some pattern there. These in the gunmetal might be one idea: daria in gunmetal Consider getting heat-resistant metal paint in a silver or pewter and paint all the detail metal work on the top of the fireplace screen. It will add another point of light in the space, without losing the overall darker feel of the screen which is nice in front of the firebox. I love the silver pillows. I like the brass tables, but I would use them as end tables on either side of the couch, and use the small silver table to the right side of the wood chair. Neither of the brass tables feels large enough as a coffee table. Using a rich coral as an accent color could be a great choice with the upholstery color and the wall color.

Wow, lots of great suggestions! Responses/clarification: gwbr54, does your suggestion include just a single panel per window, pulled off to the side? That's what it looks like in your sketch (thanks for that btw). I won't have room for art above the TV, as it's quite a large TV. I do want to get a nice wide canvas above the couch however. I was also planning a barstool at the bar area. I like the idea of a console table, or I could also fit a couple of small colorful ottomans between the window wall as suggested by some. Not crazy about turning the rug though. sueb20, I could probably paint that wall in between the brick. I can always paint it back if needed when I move out. What color were you thinking? mclarke, yep, those are small radiators under the windows (very common here in NYC). If I were to cover them, I'd almost need to cover the entire opening from the window sill to the floor I would think. Where do you get perforated metal like the picture in your post? I kind of like the idea, but I'd need a lot of metal and would have to come up with a way to make nice cuts and mount it properly. Not to mention, there's a knob to control the amount of water being fed through the radiator and I'd be blocking access to it unless I came up with a design that allowed for easily removing the covers. pricklypearcactus, the only opening to the room is a wide opening from the kitchen from where the pics were taken. There isn't much more room for anything but the couch and floor lamp I already have on the couch wall. I could probably fit an end table if needed, but it would be cramped and my coffee table is probably sufficient. I also don't want to put the couch on the opposite wall, as it would look funny b/c the center wall (white wall) between the brick juts out about a foot. I'm guessing there used to be a fireplace there or something. htnspz, I'm worried that 2 leaning mirrors might look odd. The room is small and I wouldn't want to be able to see any possible reflection of myself while seated on the couch. The room already gets a lot of light during the day and the mirrors would also block a lot of the brick which I like. General comments (in response to items that have been suggested a few times): There's really not room for a chair in the room - it would be really cramped between the coffee table and the wall. I could however fit a couple of those small colorful cube ottomans that I've seen at stores however (or one slightly large one). I also don't know what kind of effect blocking the radiators below the window would have. Also, I have a hanging lantern (asian style) floor lamp in the corner. It looks more like the "sun" in the pictures I posted, but those pics were taken at night. It seems like everyone likes the curtain panels idea, so I'll do that. Do I need 2 panels per window or just one hanging down on each end of the room like in gwbr54's sketch? I'll also definitely be getting a large canvas above the couch and I like htnspz's idea of going with something abstract and organic vs. harder geometric shapes since my rug already has plenty of that. Something similar to the picture teacats linked to (which I like), but longer/wider and on canvas. I also like the idea of a colorful bowl with pebbles or something in it for the coffee table. Now, the big question is, do I go with 2 small cube ottomans on the window wall, a bookcase, or a console table? I probably need something to bring some height into the room more than I need the additional seating an ottoman would bring. I'm already planning on getting a bar stool over by the bar and in all honesty, I probably wouldn't really have more than 1 other person (i.e. a date) in my place at any given time and we can both sit on the couch. So, bookcase with storage vs. a leaning bookshelf (no storage but I like the look) vs. console table with something on it to add a little height (maybe a plant on the table since several people liked the idea of a plant)? I could probably do a bookshelf or console table AND a couple of small colorful cube ottomans to block the radiators a bit as well if need be. Thanks again for all the suggestions!!

Good luck with the break up. I always get so worked up about this sort of thing. I try to devise all sorts of stories in my head to explain. DH always says just tell the truth ---in my 10 years of marriage I have converted to his way --- I won't admit it to him, but the outcome is always better. My sister, (and me previously) would both make all sorts of crazy excuses. Problem is, then you worry about the story catching up with you. If you just tell the guy, "Thanks so much for your bid and your time. I was really impressed with your work. You make beautiful cabinets. But, one thing I really wanted was the soft close drawers with my inset cabinets. I heard about a cabinet maker that makes this combo, so I had him do a bid as well. I expected it to not be competitive, but it was actually significantly lower. In this economy we need to make wise financial choices, and in this case I'd save some money and get the soft close that I really had my heart set on, so I feel like it is the right choice for us. Thanks again for all of your help. Of course, he may argue it with you, but in the end, you have the proof to back you up --- you want the glides, and the price IS better. No brainer. I am about to have to do this with builders --- we have 4 courting us right now, they all are bending over backwards to be helpful. Unfortunately, we can only use 1. I live in a small town and will see one of them all the time. Can you believe he is my lowest choice, but I am such a wimp that I have considered picking him so I don't have to avoid him! Luckily, one really great builder in the area has just given us a bid that is almost 100k less --- I don't know how he does it because he does everything the nice way, doesn't cut corners. All of the most beautiful homes by our property were built by him. I am so thrilled to have just gotten his bid because now I'll be able to tell the other 3 the price was so much better, we just couldn't ignore it --- we need to save money where possible. It is not just a choice of our favorite (though I really liked this builder the most as well). Anyway, I am dreading the "talk" too, so I understand, but I am definitely going to just tell them, I am getting everything I want with this guy, and the price is MUCH lower. My architect told me he suspects all of the other builders will try to drop prices to entice me. If that happens, I have a bit more negotiating power with this guy too (though I HATE negotiating). GOOD LUCK TO YOU --- just tell him the truth and move on --- you'll spend more time fretting about it, and once you do it, it won't be a big deal. Just seems like a big deal now. Rachel
