more info: the vine was first noticed 10 years ago, 5 years after purchasing the house. it does not come up every year. it's had little to no care. last fall the city hacked everything back after a summer of neglect. all clippings were tossed into the cypress (mulch & frost protection maybe). the soil pictured above is what it's been growing in. it has shade at the bottom and climbs to the sun. it is sheltered from direct sun & wind. i believe it is on the south side of the house. all around the base of the cypress, flat shoots pop up where sun barely dapples through. maybe they send roots back into the soil as they grow along the ground, until they reach the edge of the cypress, then go up to the sun. i exaggerated in saying it's climbed 40', as i was having a double rainbow moment. but it's definitely about 20'. :D thanks so much for the help. ~spazplant

I have one that I started from a cutting last year. It been flashing those nice very double coral flowers, and is about 2.5' tall now. The faded flowers tend toward whitish, but start out a lively coral. The parent plant is in z5 and gets about 6' tall by summer's end, and blooms like crazy all summer. Dies back to about 2-3' tall over winter. Can you post a photo? Cheers, Michelle

The plant you bought is undoubtedly a grafted plant ... the named variety of rose grafted to the roots of another. It sounds as if the rootstock has produced suckers. These suckers compete with the named variety. Carefully dig beside the sucker until you can see where it emerges from the plant. If it is below the bud union (the knotty part where the named variety of rose grows from), carefully tear the suckers off. Don't cut them, because that leaves parts behind that will just grow right back and start the problem all over again.
