I saved the seeds from several types of trailing petunias last year and sowed them in my greenhouse this spring. I knew they would be all shapes and sizes, but ended up with over 240 free petunias and all of them were worthy of planting. I let them come to bloom in pots so I'd have a clue what they'd look like before I set them out or put them in baskets. Many still have a trailing habit, many were various shades of purple from the softest lavender to the darkest burgundy. Some were a lovely plum, a few white, lots of pinks, and a few reds..... and I got a few variegated ones as well. I surely didn't have to buy any this year and sitting out in their urns, baskets and in the ground, sorted as to what I wanted where, they look just as nice in a more old-fashioned and slightly blowsy way as the pricey ones they replaced from last year.

Hi again Jess Aloha gets very bushy and dense after a few years though healthy and gives lots of flowers. Has to be carefully pruned not to look messy up an arbor. Coral Dawn is easy to train up an arbor and easy to maintain, likes lots of organic fertilizer. Is has red thorns but I would not say very thorny, there are thorns though, less than New Dawn. If your arbor is rather wide you might want to plant two plants of Coral Dawn. Lots of light fresh fragrance. Perhaps there is a Coral Dawn growing near you so you can see it for real.

Dublinbay, thank you for the suggestions. I will look up the two Austin's. I grew Sombreuil many years ago in a different garden for two seasons. It is a very beautiful rose that I had to remove because of the size and my planting it in a space that couldn't accommodate its vigorous growth. It was grafted and my fear would be that eventually I would see similar growth. It would be gorgeous in the space:( Jacqueline3, I plan to add a DbB to another part of my garden. I like the continuity in design etc., but subtle variation that many of the sports can add to gardens. You're description is invaluable. I wish that HMF had specificity by region, but then this forum's members fill in where it stops. I will research it too! It seems as though it could be perfect for the space.

I have cl pinkie and Peggy Martin, both planted last spring. I have 3 cl pinkies going up three different sides of my arbor, it is a very vigourous and healthy plant. It grew 12 ft and is at the top of my arbor and I expect it to keep going. It only bloomed one time but I am guessing that is due to it concentrating in growing, it's supposed to be a non stop bloomer when established. Peggy Martin is also very healthy and a vigourous grower although it didn't get as tall as the pinkies. The information I have read about Peggy is that she puts on a huge spring flush and maybe a fall flush in my hot Texas weather but she repeats more in a climate with milder summers. Hope this helps. Have fun choosing. Also neither one is thorny, the pinkies are supposed to be thornless but mine have little wicked sharp thorns under the leaves but the stems are smooth. I would suggest cl pinkie if you want something that is going to grow fast with a lot of coverage.
