New to container gardening. Put a 2' Ruby supreme guava (from S Fla)in a 18" terracotta pot, with the water tray under the pot that came with it. A mix of small pine bark, bag of orchid mix(could not find CHC locally), some manure (black cow) and spagnum moss, small amt of Osmocote fertilizer. Watered it well - the water tray is holding water that drained thru. Is it wrong to let water sit in the tray? In the yard, filtered light & 90+ degree days. How dry do I let it get till water again? Has already dropped a couple leaves but not looking bad. thx

It's botanical name is Acca Sellowiana, but it also lists the common name which is Pineapple Guava. I've never ordered a guava from WP's before so don't know how tall it'll be. Also, when I ordered Pineapple and Strawberry guava's before, it was either from Jung's, Henry's or Gurney's.Do you get catalogs from any of these nurseries? They also have online sites. They were decent sizes and compact. Patty, I planted the Poncirus (flying dragon) in the ground last summer, '04 and it overwintered fine..didn't even brown. I used mulch about halfway up, but it's slow-growing..Well, actually, I moved it this summer because it wasn't getting enough sun in that spot, since I've moved it, it's put on new growth. I think WP's charges 5.00 for the Poncirus now..not sure, I'd have to check the site. Like I said, it was approximately 1' tall and at the time, 4.00. I also planted a basjoo banana last summer, and another this yr. One was bought at a place GW doesn't allow to name, the recent at WP's. I also bought 2 palms which I planted this summer..don't know if they'll make it, but two guys on Palm Forum, (Chicago and Ontario) has successfully grown palms in their yards. I am not much of a guava fan either. I love the paste or jelly made from it, just not too happy with the fresh fruit. I have tried numerous pinks and reds. I have grown a bunch too, including a large Thai white that was to be eaten green. First, here in Florida, it is a constant battle with the fruit flies to be able to enjoy a ripe fruit. The green ones are OK, crunchy, not all that much flavor. The seedy red and pink ones have a strong aroma (some would say)....my wife claims they remind her of the smell of cat urine. In anycase, my all time favorite guava was an Indonesian White Seedless that was being sold by Hopkins Tropical Fruit Nursery before they picked up and moved from Broward County north and west into Glades County. Mine got blown down and died, years ago, but I have a friend that still has it. The fruits are small but nicely flavored and without all those very annoying seeds.

Ethan I started a mexican cream last Oct. from seed....I absolutely loved them, it's my only white guava. It's only about 1' tall because it's in the NE side of the house. I'm with you about the tropical pink a good balance guava, prolific bearer. My favorite guava is my malaysian red although my Indian red has a wonderfull creamy sweet flavor. I am not too impress with HK pink mine tasted bland maybe this years crop will be better JF
