Kitchens Design Dilemma

kitchen backsplash - thoughts please

Hello! I’m trying to decide how far up my backsplash should go. Please see the attached picture.

The two painter tape/blue lines represent two floating shelves that will be hung. I’m wondering if my backsplash should go right up to underneath the first shelf, or if it should cover the entire wall as depicted by the red markings in the picture. Thoughts?

Please note that the bottom of the lower floating shelf is in line with the underneath/bottom of my kitchen cabinets.

Because you chose glossy tile I would only do up to the lower shelf otherwise I think it may be too much. I think (from the picture) the tile leans towards gray which the other elements are not

all the way to the ceiling! Make a statement.

The brighter the better. remember, Color, Texture, Pattern SHINE!

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I have a 1928 registered historical house and I am so, so torn on the kitchen. It's a good thing that it's not happening for several years! My initial thought was something like this one. Maybe using those varigated green tiles (usually found on fireplaces) instead of white. I love this kitchen. http://www.houzz.com/projects/4299/ravenswood-manor Right now we have it in the unfitted style (budget!) and just paint for the backsplash. The sink is original from 1928, but the metal cab is from the 50's, and our stove is a Chambers from the 50s I have to say, we DID save and splurge on square-edge tiles for the bathroom and I am SO, SO happy that we did. We did the work ourselves and saved in other areas.

That combination should be fine with your cabinets. Wait until the new countertops are in to make a final backsplash decision though. I also suggest you swap your bulbs out for something a little cooler, which should help the grey go better.

I don't know what your client has in mind completely. It might be worth asking the client for some inspiration pictures for what she has in mind. I think some glass mosaics might be overpowering for that granite. But there are some glass mosaics that might work as long as they are very plain. Super white glass tile Maybe something like this with a tiny bit of pattern: Silver planks glass tile Or maybe this one which might work with the colour in the counter: glass mosaic - raw silk

@jck910 I should have clarified that next summer I plan to reface/repaint my oak cabinets to white tops and light grey bottoms. Not sure if that would make a difference in your input. 🙂

Also my countertops are Pental Misterio and sink is Blanco metallic grey.

If you're planning on re-doing the cabinets next summer, I would wait until then to do the backplash. You may find what you choose now doesn't look good with what you end up with.

This is the look I’m going for. That’s the backsplash I’ve selected. Just not in the budget this year to reface the cabinets.

I like what you selected however I am in agreement with mxk3, wait till you can do everything at once. With regards to the surface to tile, I think either would look nice.

That style backsplash was way overdone the last 12+ years ... we are now seeing people on this forum ripping them out and going with something less busy. I would also suggest that you wait.

Yes, wait. The backsplash is the last thing you do and your thoughts may change significantly after your cabinets are painted and you also have more time to consider the options. Not to mention, costs for all things construction related (products, labor, etc) are elevated right now (may or may not change in a year), and pros are very busy so you'd likely have a wait anyway if you are hiring a professional to install. Backsplashes aren't necessary. They are the icing so wait until it's time to frost the cake.
