You might also think of having the edges curbed. I've done a series of different walkways all the way around my landscape and have probably 5 different types not counting a flagstone one that I'm currently doing in front of my pond. The curbed one has 4 18" semi-circle patterned placed together to form a 3' step. I have them spaced about 6" apart with a 6" edge on both sides. I bought them a few years back at Lowe's but they are Oldcastle and don't seem to be available anymore. I have Bluestar Creeper planted in the spaces. I'll post a pic of it under construction. (The diamond in the middle is for a large glazed pot with a mountain hemlock to brake up the walk). I also have a serpentine walk that leads from my front porch over to my pond gate. It is done with irregular cast spaced randomly and a stack stone border. It too has Bluestar Creeper between the steppers. Here is a link that might be useful:

i may be too late with this, but i thought i might be able to help. you really don't need the "landscape cloth" layer, and in fact your suspicion that it inhibits the compaction is correct. the compacted dg will tend to break up as it slips on the landscape cloth and be less stable than if it were just on a base course. i am an architect and have been working with landscape architects on decomposed granite paths, parking lots, patios, etc. for years. we have always had problems when the contractor insisted on using some kind of weed prevention cloth layer. the first thing you need to do is REMOVE the grass - don't just kill it. if you leave the dead grass, as it decomposes it will create voids that will cause settlement. the best way to install dg is to compact the base soil with a plate compactor, lay down about 4-6" of what is called aggregate base course or "road base" (assorted size gravel with some fines) and then compact that with the plate compactor, and finally the dg (about 3 inches thick) and compact that too. if the base is properly prepared and everything is compacted that way, it will be a rare and hardy weed that ever makes it's way through. make sure that the surface is crowned slightly or else slopes one way or the other. dg will absorb water, but it does so at a semi-slow rate, and you want to eliminate ponding. you don't really need any kind of stabilizer or binder unless you want to support vehicular traffic. if you do, i don't know that you can get it at lowes or home depot. we usually have it supplied by a company called Stabilizer Solutions (out of Arizona) but they pre-mix it into the material and truck it out to the jobsite (cross country if necessary). not really good for do-it-yourself kind of jobs...

Okay, I'm going to upset the apple cart here and give another possibility for this hosta. It does indeed look like an immature Liberty, and it could very well be just that. However, it also looks very much like Twilight. It's difficult to determine from the picture what the size of the plant is, or the plant habit. Liberty is, like it's parent plant Sagae, a vase shaped, upright hosta, and the leaves tend to grow at a more horizontal angle than Twilight. It is also a much larger plant at maturity. Twilight is more of a mounding hosta, although it is slightly upright as well. It's leaves tend to angle more than those on Liberty. So, a couple of questions to see if we can determine what this lovely plant should be labeled. How large is the clump at this time? Is the plant habit very upright, or more mounding? Perhaps most importantly, where was it purchased? Liberty wasn't in any of the box stores 3-4 years ago, but Twilight has been sold at WalMart and other box stores for quite a number of years. It may not be possible to determine which hosta this is until it reaches maturity, which for Liberty would be around 6-7 years. Twilight will reach it's mature height in 3-5 years, but will throw divisions and spread out much more quickly that Liberty.
