Path construction

For about 20 years we've had a path made with slate pieces just set in the lawn, about 30’ long and 2’ wide. The slate pieces do not fill the entire width and length of the path -- there are a couple of inches of space between them. Over time they have sunk down and weeds and grass have grown between them. So I took them all out and dug out the pathway, and will extend the length a bit as well.

My plan is to put edging along the path then put down landscape fabric and pea gravel, and set the slate on that so it has a solid base and the weeds are blocked. I'm trying to figure out whether to also use stone dust or paver base, both under the slate pieces for a more level surface, and between them so that the pea gravel doesn't move around too much.

Any suggestions, either on the overall plan, or on what to use under / between the slate pieces?

Thanks!

Tom
