Need new ideas for side-slope walkway

I am requesting suggestions in re-doing my walkway without breaking the bank. I have considered large stone steps, but at the price of stone these days, it makes this project somewhat pricey. As you can see in the pics, the present walkway is constructed of 2x6's with 1-2" river rock. I'd like to get away from that and do something new. The uphill side is below grade and the downhill side above grade, necessitating the use of the 2x6's. I am considering using 4x6" timbers and setting step stones inside that framework, but it seems too much like the existing walkway and I want something different.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
