Blight across whole garden?

Hi all. I've lookrd all over the web but not sure what this is. Its suddenly affecting my tomatoes, seranos , zuccini and gourd plants. Celery is fine go figure. I think late blight but im not sure ? Help!

yes.. youve showed us the ugly stuff.. can we see some of the plants..and the overall garden ...

frankly it looks like the onset of the uglies of july and august in my MI ... btw.. where are you .. big city name ... and whats the weather been for the last month.. how do you water.. and do you fert.. is it foliar fert?? .. etc ...

give us info to work with.. beyond you leading us on with one word ...

Hi Ken! I live in San Jose CA, in the hills where we have lots of insects, deer, raccoons, foxes and all kinds of nuisances. Its been quite warm the last month upper 80s to mid 90s which is normal for here. I used to water daily but some of my tomatoes (napoli long tomatoes) developed decay at the tips so I've switched to every other morning with deeper watering. I also check to make sure the soil is mostly dry before watering again. The dirt itself I completely replaced this year (5 feet down) as the soil here is mostly sand, rock and clay. It was replaced with a organic garden blend from a local soil business. I mix up 1 tbsp maxibloom per 2 gallon once every other week and water all the plants. I actually just did a soil test today using the luster leaf kit and its sitting at 6.5 PH, NPK is deficient, sufficient, sufficient. If the test is accurate looks like I need more nitrogen so im ordering some Neptune's harvest fish meal to supliment. I also noticed there seems to be a spider mite problem as i saw some of that webbing and 1 of my pepper leaves had the white eggs, I sprayed them down with neem oil and dish soap blend which seems to be working mostly, I use this yearly especially after initial plant due to all the bugs herr but got a bit lax the last 2 months in spraying. The fact that all the new flowers are also withering and dying is killing me, this is the 4th year I've had a garden and have never had this happen. Any advice appreciated!! Thanks!

I don't about spores from the fires.. the big one down in Colorado Springs is quite far from us in Boulder and the small one we had here was put out about a week ago. It definitely might be worth applying a fungicide, thank you for the advice. I have not sprayed anything on the plants, nor have I fertilized. I did spray organic insecticide soap on my kale to get rid of some aphids a few days ago, but those are on the other side of the garden and I doubt the little soap I used could have done that damage! However, my neighbor's garden is right on the other side of a chain link fence, so who knows if he might have had something to do with this.. it's worth asking! Have you seen this sort of problem with herbicides and/or fertilizers? If so, what kind specifically? Thanks for the post!

but someone in the Tomato Forum pointed out this forum, which I didn't know about, so I'm reposting it here. ] I'm that someone. LOL Barb, Do you have any pictures and/or are you absolutely convinced that what your plants have is Late BLight ( P.infestans)? I ask only b'c Late BLight is not common in your area, as you know, Late Blight is lethal, regardless of the weather, and from the time the typical symptoms first appear the plants will be a mass of black stinking tissue within 1-2 weeks. What might be sprayed would be sprayed as a preventative, not after the fact, and products available to home growers are not very effective, to be quite honest. No, it doesn't splash up form the soil unless infected plants had been grown there in a previous season; all new infections are airborne. Has someone made a definitive diagnosis for your plants re Late Blight? If not, do you want to go thru some descriptions on your part and questions on my part? Carolyn

"I know, you're not supposed to get the leaves wet." Plain water does not harm tomato leaves or plants. The recommendation not to get the leaves wet comes from avoiding splash back that might carry soil born diseases. I watered for many years with an overhead sprinkler and never had any more of a problem with diseases than I have now that I drip irrigate. If wetting the leaves were a problem, nurseries would not be able to grow and sell tomato plants because 99% of them overhead water everything in their greenhouses. It would be very difficult to set up a drip system that would not miss some of the tomatoes in cell packs. Now as for Don's issue: Perhaps gjshawk is right and there is somehing under the soil that affects the plants when they get large enough to reach it. Have you checked to see if you have a RKN problem? Are your three plants in containers exhibiting the same problems? If they do, that would seem to rule out soil bourne issues (provided you have not used garden soil in the containers and they are isolated from it so we can rule out RKN). You know the usual questions, but specifically what is your watering schedule and how/what do you feed the plants? Most importantly, what color is your shovel handle? (Just kidding on that.) Betsy

Anney, I have just explored Dr. Dirt's site re using cornmeal as a plant fungicide. As usual he is giving incomplete advice. He takes ideas posted on GardenWeb and that other gardening Forum we can't mention here and gives them his own spin omitting important information. To date, after much experimentation, I have not had success controlling any tomato diseases/blights/fungus using cornmeal. Some have reported good results but I am not been able to. For those who would like to try a cornmeal tea do a search here on GW for Cornmeal Tea to find formulas I have posted. Also do a search for Aspirin Technique which has been my personal best, cheap remedy to date. Some claim it is not organic but to date aspirin has been certified safe for human consumption. The IMPORTANT part of attempting to control tomato problems with WHATEVER one chooses to use is to begin treatment EARLY in the tomato's growth...when the plant has grown a second set of true leaves is a good time to begin.

It is not how late blight looks like. Could be just too much of everything: replacing, watering, spraying. In the future rather try to build your soil instead. It could be long process, but it is worth it.

New flowers drying and withering could be just plain too much heat...watering won't help at all..if climate change is going to give you 100 degree temps, I would seriously think about investing in shade cloth..other than that...heat kills.

I'd guess you need a fertilizer balanced for tomalo/peppers/eggplant (all nightshades) and another for other vegetables. You might be getting end-rot from a lack of magnesium, which is common in CA. Try making a weak solution of Epsom Salts in water to help that.

I agree that you need to build your soil, starting with really good compost.

I also agree that the many vegetables, especially those in the nightshade family don't like high temperatures. Ours have been in the 100s for weeks.now. The peppers are about the only things that seem to thrive in the heat.
