I second everything mtn said. That's how I handled it when my sister was near the end. You'll know at least a day or two in advance what your return time could be and can make your reservation then. I'm sorry you are losing a sibling.

I agree with those who have suggested getting there, think about returning flights when you are ready.

Now a PSA - for future reference for all. Having a travel agent was a great help to us when we were in a similar situation a few years ago. All it took was a phone call to her and she did the work booking flights.

I would book with Delta one way, and then book the flight home. We use the same hub airport as you, and have been pretty shocked at the lack of flights available on AA lately! It seems vastly different…almost like we’ve lost all of our hub perks. 🤬

Dd is heading to Hawaii for her ”gap year without the gap” program in early September, and we had to book her on Delta with like two stops bc there weren’t any non-stop AA flights to HON that enabled her to get her connection to Hilo within the 6 hour window that she needs to arrive. We never had issues like that before. 😩 First world problems, but when you are used to it being one way, its hard to go back.

I am so sorry for all you are going through with travel arrangements added to the sorrow of losing your brother. When our son became ill and died in May 2020 we had 5 airports and 15 hrs of flight time plus the pandemic. I am so glad a flight opened. Sending strength to you.c

So sorry to hear about your brother. Be sure to check in well ahead of time and get there early. It’s quite possible they are oversold. I would also check in with the gate agent, telling then why youre traveling to make sure you don’t get bumped.

Tip I learned (from an AA supervisor), when I was irate after being bumped from an overfilled flight; check-in ON-LINE early - before going to the airport. You can still print your boarding passes at the airport.

Oh yeah, I check in, get my mobile boarding pass, and I am a Gold level on American, and I will try to upgrade to extra or first class if I can, so it's very unlikely I would get bumped. Also, they do the volunteer list electronically, too. I have a voucher pre-lockdown from one of my last conferences Feb 2020 that I can still use, but they said it has be booked 12 days in advance (and mailed or turned it at the airport).

Hi, everyone, thanks for the kind thoughts. He passed peacefully on Saturday around noon. DH will fy up for the wake and funeral, and we’ll fly back together.
