Dutch Colonial Front Door Color

What color should I paint the front door of our Dutch colonial? I included a photo of the front door in its current color green, which I really don’t love. I had thought red but I had a red door in my last home and ready for something different. I also was thinking navy but worry it will clash with black shutters. What do you think? Is black the safest bet?

I would remove the shutters. They really don't belong on double windows and you already have nice wide window trim. Then you could paint the door & storm door (not sidelights) charcoal gray or black or navy. I would use glossy paint

My first thought was a classic cottage red, but since you had that before and want something different, then google yellow doors with your gray/charcoal/white palette. There's a gray colonial with a yellow door near where my mother used to live and I'd pass by and think how sharp it looked.

I think grey would look fantastic, much better than the brown. (Though I am rarely a fan of brown roofs, so I may be biased here.) I know there is a huge variety in roofing options these days. You might find something a little nicer than asphalt shingles or even just nice asphalt shingles. I know there are some replica slate products and other more architecturally interesting roofing options to look into. With the prominent roof line on your home, it might be worth the extra money. I also strongly support the idea of getting rid of every other round bush. I am generally not a fan of blob shaped bushes, so again I may be biased. The farthest right area of the last picture has more distance between the blobs and thus has some lovely structure. If you can do something similar around the rest of the garden, I think that would be a fantastic improvement. Overall your house is really cute with some interesting architecture. It also looks like a wonderful neighborhood with those large trees in back. I can't wait to see what you do with the home and hope you'll share pictures with your changes.

Thank you all for the feedback, it's giving me a lot to think about! I'm inspired by the dark green, and came across this image in another discussion - wow. BUT, i could commit to all creamy white with dark gutters and shutters and feel good with that choice too. I think I'm letting go of dark windows unless it's a dark on dark (green) monochromatic look. However, right now the house reads "green" and has always been green, so I really don't want to spend all this $$ and effort and have it look more or less the same.

Start searching for "modernized Dutch colonial." Here's one I found. Is this what you had in mind? This one has pergola and portico across the front, plus larger windows, plus front dormer windows. Maybe just pergoa and portico? Calling an architect! Changing a major architectural feature is going to require an architect and a big budget. Some have a row of dormer windows across front roof to break up the roof--less costly than above but still major. If you're going to take that on, then wait on the siding. Maybe larger windows would help. Go online and look at a lot of Dutch colonials to see if they have larger windows. In the meantime, take down the shutters. Paint the front door a new color you like that harmonizes with the cinammon roof since that takes up so much visual space. Ditto the double garage doors--same color as roof for now. Very often great landscaping can direct the eye to the foreground while a tree or an island with a tree can camouflage a façade that is less than appealing to the owner. Yellow will be perfect. My front door is BM Dorset Gold. I think it would work for you in semi-gloss.

I would get a full glass storm door so you can see the door. I agree the shutters are not right.

Just a thought, is it possible to put a free standing trellis in front of your meter? You could grow a climbing vine there and hide the utilities.

Normally I say no to painting the sidelights but without the shutters the last picture looks great
