Exterior Paint Colors for Dutch Colonial
I would love feedback on exterior paint color scheme for my house. I want to leave the brick and the garage doors as is. The house is primarily east-facing.
Everything else is getting painted: siding, windows (including mullions), fascia, soffits, gutters, shutters, doors (eventually want to replace front door). I love white board & batten and trim, and I like urbane bronze as a possible accent color (garage doors are already a similar color and in great condition) and maybe a lighter tan/gray for shutters and doors. I really like dark gutters and downspouts. I am split between dark bronze windows or all white windows. If I did dark windows, would the window trim be dark, or just the sashes? Would I leave the sunroom windows white so that the house is more balanced? It's hard to see in the photo, but the bay window also stumps me... There are three more bay windows on the back of the house. Should they be painted one solid color, or window sashes and trim two different colors?
The roof is not getting replaced - it's a great quality roof and has lots of life left. Sometimes it looks brown and sometimes charcoal.

I'm having trouble finding inspiration photos that look like our house, especially with unpainted brick. I think the brick is very pretty - it has a very light touch of German schmear. If the brick is super problematic, I may be convinced to paint it. Please don't zoom in on the landscaping - we just moved in a couple months ago and it's a work in progress - we will bring it all back to life! :) Thanks in advance for your input.

2 years agoI love this color with brick and IMO would look awesome with your house Please do not paint the brick IMO the fastest way to devaue your house is to paint the brick .

Comments (20)Organic, thank you so much for the complement. I fell in love with the house the moment I saw it even though it was in really REALLY rough shape when I first saw it. Luckily we were able to look past the chipping paint and god awful gold brocade wallpaper (as a matter of fact EVERY wall was wallpapered and that was real fun taking all that down lol) to see that the bones were solid and really charming. We have been here for 8 years this fall but I really did not start working on the house in serious mode until about two years ago. I had a baby when we first moved in so between taking care of her and my two other kids, there just was not time or energy for the big stuff. I am only now just getting down to making it what I want it to be. The interior pictures are what the house looked like a few years ago which I knew would only be a temporary fix. I am in the middle of doing everything over again and getting down to the real changes I want to make. lol...hey, I am an out of work interior decorator so I have to use my skills somehow hehehe... Anyway, about your question, the paint color is Benjamin Moore "Butter". Two years ago we paid a contractor to scrape and paint the house. He gave me an estimate of 4,000 ... it ended up costing us 7,000 and the paint started peeling the very next year. Needless to say I am furious. The prep work he did was shoddy. So I am going to be doing some scraping myself in the next couple of weeks and will have to buy more paint and do certain areas over again. I sure hope they have this butter color still because I love it and do not wish to go lighter or darker. Usually if they no longer carry a certain color you can usually find the same color in their color charts with a new name attached to it. Comments (7)I would get a new front door and lantern lights 1/3 of its height (add matching lights flanking the garage door instead of the motion spot,) add a walk out to the front curb, close up the windows on the garage door, and improve the landscaping with curved beds flanking the asphalt and walk. So cute to see them all together! Looks like you have at least one other next door? 2 years agoBrooke, the color in Patricia's photo is a custom mix. These are some that appear similar from Ben Moore. Your brick is great and would look really nice with white.

Or Taupe with white soft trim.

2 years agoThank you all for the feedback, it's giving me a lot to think about! I'm inspired by the dark green, and came across this image in another discussion - wow.
BUT, i could commit to all creamy white with dark gutters and shutters and feel good with that choice too. I think I'm letting go of dark windows unless it's a dark on dark (green) monochromatic look. However, right now the house reads "green" and has always been green, so I really don't want to spend all this $$ and effort and have it look more or less the same.

2 years agoMy husband photoshopped a creamy white with green shutters. Not sure about the shutter color, but this mockup is making me think maybe the gutters should be the same white - it will help the trim look more substantial. The landscaping changes we have planned will reveal a lot more of the brick - we're not removing the Japanese Maple in the front but we've been slowly pruning it.

get a sample of Halcyon green and SW Creamy. those two should be fine together.as for your husbands photo shop, it looks like a sickly green to me! if you want cream, then pick a cream! and the halcyon for the shutters.
You could also try these combos
these three would also look realy good w/the brick. red barn for the door. the other two siding/trim
