Vinyl plank floor transition

I'm putting LVP, vinyl plank floor, in my kitchen and eventually in the living room (adjacent to kitchen, currently has laminate floor) what I want to do is transition from the one style floor to another without using the raised "T" type transition trim. I'm thinking of using a plank and setting it perpendicular to the rest of kitchen or maybe a tile transition. But the big question is how do I do this. Or an other ideas will be great.

Are you planning on using the SAME vinyl in the living room? If you are, then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you purchase ALL the vinyl at once. I know. That's a big chunk of change...but here's WHY: Man made products like vinyl (engineered hardwood, laminate, etc) have a 'shelf life' of 2 years (or so). That means it is produced, sold off and then NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN!

Yikes! And NO ONE knows WHEN your chosen vinyl will END it's run. No one. Not the sellers. Not the distributers. Just the factory manager, and she isn't allowed to divulge that information.

So...if you WANT the same vinyl in kitchen and living room, you are BEST OFF to purchase it all at the same time.

As for transitioning, I'm assuming the laminate is floating. And I'm assuming the vinyl is floating. That means BOTH of the floors MUST be allowed to float. To do that, they must have a minimum of 1/4" - 1/2" of space between them were they meet. Must...Have...There is no way around it. None.

Oh...wait there is. Glue down BOTH floors. And then you can do what you want. But that's a B!tch to remove at a later date.

Remember: purchase it all RIGHT NOW if you plan the same floor throughout.

We did our whole basement a few months back in luxury vinyl tile (that's the lvt above :) ) and just love it. I think it's a no-brainer if you have dogs that will scratch up hardwood or need waterproofing (we put it through our laundry area and mudroom). On a main floor, I'd still do hardwood, because all of the other options feel fake underfoot (barefoot). But if that's not an option, the lvt is warm, soft, and has some awesome looks these days. I really think it's going to completely replace laminate pretty quickly.

I have vinyl plank with huge dogs in my walk out basement where they have free access to a large dog run it has been in for 11 yrs and still looks awesome. We have a laminate on our main floor that looks like slate and has also stood up to the brats for 11 yrs there is no way wood could have handled all that abuse. IMO laminate or vinyl plank in good condition is better than scratched up wood floor that would have to be refinished before sale. We now have a great pyrenees as our 2 old dogs have passed away and he really is rough on floors , no wood could possibly stand up to him.The pic is the laminate floor and the old dogs

A properly installed carpet (with a nice pad) sits 3/4" tall. A vinyl tile can be 1/4" thin. You will have 1/2" floor height difference. If you are happy with that, then go for it. If I were your builder, I would have you sign a waiver stating you are fully aware of the issue and you are choosing to continue with the install. I prefer a high-end laminate (same price as mid/low grade vinyl) with 6mm (1/4" cork). The laminate (1/2") + 6mm cork (1/4") = 3/4" floor height = perfect match to the carpet. In the flooring industry we do NOT like to see 1/2" floor heights. It never looks good and NO ONE ever said, "Oh thank you for creating a toe-stubbing floor height difference! You're brilliant!" Look VERY closely at 1/2" floor height variation. Find a strip of wood that is roughly 1/2" thick. Now nail it down in your bedroom doorway. See how long you can 'stand it'. I may sound facetious, but it is the only way to figure out if YOU can accept 1/2" difference. Professionals in the flooring industry do NOT like 1/2". Your builder is doing you a MASSIVE favour by pointing this out. Congratulations. You have found the 1 in 1000 builders. This is intensely rare to see/hear. Please listen to them.
