We are in and now shoe molding is squeaking!
Comments (6)Did the flooring squeak before the cabinets were installed, or was the flooring laid down after the cabinets? If cabinets were installed first, the board end/s possibly could be rubbing against the molding or the cabinet as the floor flexes. Use a cardboard tube (one end to ear and other end to floor) or a touch test to narrow the offending area down to the immediate vicinity producing the noise. However, I'm a bit dubious about the shoe moulding squeaking. If the squeaks are that consistent, have one person step to make squeak while the other gently touches along the molding. Other should be able to feel the slight vibration of the squeak if it's caused by the floor rubbing along the molding. I'm a bit more inclined to think the squeak is caused by the floorboards flexing down to a slight low place in the underlayment. If you have a warranty, ask the builder to check it out... frankly, I think I'd ask even if it wasn't under warranty....See MoreThose with wood base board do you have shoe molding?
Comments (6)I think the shoe is sometimes used to hide any gap that may appear between the baseboard and floor as the wood of the baseboard shrinks due to seasonal variations in humidity. A wider base will shrink a bit more than a narrower one. So, depending on what materials are used and their dimensions, and whether it's all painted and if so how, this isn't an issue. That said, I have 5" wood base sans shoe and have no seasonal gaps. A shoe can also cover less careful work. If the floor is new, it should be flat and baseboard scribing, which takes some degree of skill, should'nt be necessary, giving you a better chance that the installed base will be tight to the floor, no matter who's installing it. I'd go without, unless your contractor has a good reason to use the shoe. Did an architect draw the plan? If so, maybe there's a design reason for it....See MoreWhat to seal gap in hardwood before putting down shoe moulding?
Comments (2)You can buy polyurethane backer rod at a hardware store. Backer rod is forced in large gaps and then the caulk is applied. I think the diameters start with 1/4". I agree that caulk should be all you'll need for most of the gaps....See MorePix please: baseboards without shoe molding
Comments (12)I don't like the shoe molding. In my old house I didn't have it. In our new one we have the shoe molding. It looks fine either way. The reason I don't like it is because of furniture that has legs that make it stick out further from the wall due to that little molding. I hate the gap you get. I tend to have furniture like shaker style where the legs cause this gap. Never thought about it before having shoe molding in this house. Here is from my old house. The difference in color between baseboards wasn't as obvious in real life as you never faced the FP due to the layout of the house. Just showing this one as that is all I could find that showed tile too....See Moreemilyam819
