Paint over new pre-catalyzed lacquer
Comments (8)Couple thoughts: You're masking them off yourself. What happens if something goes wrong. Are you getting all this on paper with sigs, or just talking it thru. I was kinda kidding, but kinda not about being in someone else's shop; I have a habit of thinking about the what if's. Can he help you, give you guidance about what to do after he sprays 'em. Like how long to wait and then how to subsequently mask off the lacquer so you can do the paint. Can he direct you to the primer and paint that you should use on the raw wood to complement the lacquer. Are we sure this is worth it? If he's not going to do the masking for you, maybe it would be easier, less work for you, to just let him spray the whole thing and you nail down the right process and products for painting after the fact....See MorePaint Experts! Help! Issue with lacquer finish on cabinets
Comments (9)thanks everyone! So I have posted more pictures to a shutterfly site. The original picture is at a joint in the wood, but the imperfection is on an angle, it does not run along the joint. On the edge you can see the paint flaking off. This is happening at multiple spots. I also have one drawer front (also on island) that just randomly has paint flaking off. So by brittle I mean that the paint very easily chips and once the finish is "broken" paint continues to flake off with great ease. The sample of the finish, which I still have, is much "tougher". The whole job is brittle and very easily damaged, but this peeling issue is ony evident on the island....so far. My biggest concerns are 1) how this is going to get fixed and 2) That these problem areas are going to start surfacing around the entire kitchen as time goes on. Also, down the road I was planning on repainting these...I have 3 ltitle kids and I expected these would get beat up . Once they are older i was going to just have everything repainted (I have been told this is possible). If we are having issues with the finish not sure how that would work. Thanks again! Comments (6)Just my 2 cents... It is a sin to paint those cabinets, but between those two products the Hi-bild precat is the clear winner. However, Hi-bild is a nitrocellulose lacquer and will yellow over time. So your alabaster will eventually get distinctly more yellow. I would talk to your painter about using Sher Wood CAB lacquer if you want to keep that alabaster color. I personally prefer their waterborne finish which is Sher Wood Kem Aqua plus. It is slightly more durable, will not yellow, sprays on easy, is much less toxic and doesn't blow you up. However, I am not sure you can get that deep black with it, you will have to ask. Please remember that lacquer goes boom so be sure you turn off any ignition source like pilot lights and make sure you have a lot of ventilation. ---- There are a few other strong products like 2 part polys but if your painter is familiar with lacquer and wants to use SW I would stick with one of the recommendations above....See MoreSherry Brighton
