Show me your Fire Island Hosta

I've mentioned in other threads about my struggling Fire Island. I've just moved it, again, to the east side of the house, where it will get some morning sun, then shade rest of the day, in hopes it will be happier there.

I'd love to see pics of other Fire Island hostas, to see how great mine might someday look, or to see that others are struggling too.

I'll start by posting a few pics of mine.

When I bought it in 2018 - loved its beautiful red Petioles

2019 - still looking ok - but not very tall

2020 - not doing so good - short again, getting bleached out, and being eaten by something

2021 - still not tall. Bleached out already and it's only June. And being eaten again. Now in a new spot, where I hope it will be happy.

Any advice on how to help it be healthier and happier, will be appreciated. 🙂

EE, THANK you for the picture of your Dark Shadows, I am astonished at the size of it. Little did I know it could get that large. I not only have one which is growing nicely, I ordered a second one this spring. Now, I suppose I'll be covered up in Dark Shadows! Wow, it is so pretty. And, it is one of the fragrants too. Harry, your garden is a perfect spot to meander. Not only are the hosta in fine form, the entire space is well balanced and appropriately arranged. Are you one who keeps a tour garden? I think it is beautiful. Surely you have help maintaining it in such a pristine condition?

I love pie-crusted hostas, so I have several :) These are all recent purchases, within the last 3 years. Niagara Falls: Marilyn Monroe (not actually shiny, it was raining): Emerald Ruff Cut: Queen of the Seas: Choo Choo Train: Lakeside Paisley Print: Sea Gulf Stream: Sky Dancer: Neptune: I also just bought 8 new piecrusted ones: Spartacus, Cold Heart, Childhood Fantasy, Shimmy Shake, Cranberry Wine, Invincible, Lakeside Hoola Hoop, & Lakeside Cindy Cee (had to get one after seeing UK-Hostaman's. Hi, hobokenkitchen Guidelines are just guidelines, and my husband and I never have felt crowded with the aisle and dimensions that we have in our kitchen -- true we each have a body mass index under 25! But things feel efficient in there: we can easily turn from one line of counters or from the range to the island without taking more than a couple of steps, and the 24" square island utility sink is easily accessible from both sides of the narrow island, from the prep counter against the windows and from the range on the interior wall. The refrigerator/freezer doors are not 36" wide, either, so it doesn't swing too much into the space, and even when the dishwasher door is fully open (on the window side, to the left of the island utility sink) it is possible to sidle around it. I think my only concern having lived with this arrangement for over a year is: it will be interesting to see how well the cork floor holds up over the years, because we really do cover the same territory on that floor over and over. So far no sign of extra wear. But I have extra cork tiles saved! Good luck to you, and thanks to CoCo for supplying those links. lynn

xena45 - funny! No one ever asked about my paint color until this week and now this is the second time! The paint is Enoki by C2 Paints. It's less beige than the photo makes it out to be, at least in my house, it has a gold-green tone to it, maybe a bit more camel? Anyway, I love C2 colors, they are very drenched with color and use about an average of 7 pigment colors in each paint. We do like it, it seems to blend with many different colors. However, I have been toying with the idea of a French Grey now that our lovely countertops have been installed. You have to understand, I love change and am constantly updating here and there around my house. If we do go with the FG in the kitchen and family, we will keep the Enoki in the master suite, it's lovely. Thanks for asking! Mindi

On East side of house under a pine tree. I will need to move it this fall since the tree is in poor shape and needs to come down. Bleached out on the spots which get the sun. Location for this one is challenging.

I have moved mine several times because it burned wherever I planted it. Sooooooo, finally planted it in a shady corner. Still ,didn’t look good for a couple of years! Now however it’ts looking pretty good these days. This sun is at the very end of the day.

How's everyone's Fire Island doing, now that it's September?

I think mine likes its new location. Still major leaf damage, but a few new ones didn't get eaten. But best of all, she had flowers, for I think, the first time ever.
