island hood fans - please show me yours
Comments (13)Generally, (or maybe I should write hopefully), fans for hoods have monotonic fan curves so that the fan cannot get into a hunting mode where its speed oscillates. I think two such fans in series would also not hunt, but it is always a possibility given that with two controls each could be run at a different point on its fan's fan curve and that there is a lag between air flow changes at one fan before that flow gets to another. In any case, what I meant above was that the roof fan could be installed and operated with the hood fan turned off. Removal of the hood fan, or its use as a booster, would be something that one determined second. Removal would reduce noise, even if the roof fan were sized to equal the flow possible from running both together. Non-removal but not operated would cause some undesirable flow restriction. I don't see a mechanism for burn-out from series fans so long as they don't hunt. As always, the larger the roof fan, the lower the blade tip turbulence and noise when run at a speed that has the same flow rate as a smaller fan run at maximum. I don't want to try to divine the thought processes of the marketing departments of stylish hood manufacturers. But I imagine that they don't believe their customer base has sufficient interest in that feature. kas...See MoreShow me your pics of kitchens w/o islands...
Comments (14)Buehl-- we're hoping that the spare bedroom upstairs will end up becoming the new playroom, and some stuff will be in their rooms. We'll end up with a small toy chest in the living room and the rest upstairs. So the whole "new space" thats created when we take down the wall will just be kitchen and dining room. After seeing Raenjapan's kitchen I may be swayed back to keeping the kithen to the left side and moving the bench for the banquette along the 94" wall and putting a penninsula between the other two windows. Lyvia-- the two 24" bases you see in the current kitchen are actually an island with a strange overhang. I wouldn't be able to put a fridge there. (I know the drawing is a little confusing, it was drawn mostly to show the layout of the first floor.) I also think I won't really have room for two separate seating areas in the kitchen, even if one is really small. Once I start drawing things in, and factoring in wide enough walkways it gets crowded fast. nini & florantha-- seems like G-shaped kitchens are more popular than I thought!!! That is what I origianlly was thinking for the kitchen (towards the left of the empty floorplan above). I love hearing that you have this same thing and it works for you. Also, we currently have Austrailan Cypress flooring in about 75% of the downstairs and plan to push it right through the new kitchena nd dining space as well. Its really beautiful (here is the internet pic.) LRy-- I think the pendants are from Ikea. if not, they are almost identical. If you go to their website ikea-usa.com I think under other departments they list lighting, and its 3 or 4 pages in. $29.99!! I saw them last weekend in person and fell in love. They are really sharp looking. Mnerg-- there are LOTS of possibilities with this blank space. TOO many! LOL! I am having a terrible time making up my mind. I keep worrying I won't ever get it right! I have also considered a small movable table for the center of the kitchen. I guess if I end up with a large center space I can always buy something like that to hang out in the middle when I need it to. Thanks everyone for all the help!!...See MorePlease show me pics of your island hoods
Comments (7)lovestocook... I remember the pics of your kitchen because the cabinets are so unique and beautiful. Contemporary, clean, yet warm and inviting. Your hood suits your purposes perfectly! We went down to the house we're going to renovate and I took a look at the area again. Now I"m thinking of completely changing up the layout yet again so the hood won't be smack dab in the middle of the living area. Rather then try to explain... I"m going to take some pics of the exisitng mess (construction site and all) and post them for ideas. I'm still a work in progress when it comes to drawing layouts so I think some real time pics will help to start the process rolling a little better. If I do change it around, the hood would be infront of a huge 9' long window that has about 18" of space above it before the ceiling and the same amount of space below it before the floor. I guess that would make the window 5' high (DUH!... took me a minute to figure that out!) When I took a tape measure to a spot 30" above a standard height base cabinet I was surprised at how low that actually is. Since the area is going to be all open, I'm not yet sure if I want it in the siteline from family room straight through to the backyard. The backyard is what makes this house so glorious. Thank goodness this is a long term project and we are just beginning to begin. Thanks for taking the time to post pics....See Moreplease show me your island and table lighting!!!
Comments (14)It took me forever to decide on the lights over my island. I originally bought some bell shaped pendants but decided they were too generic looking and I didn't want to deal with the bugs and dust inside. I have low ceilings so I finally decided on some semi-flush mounted fixtures from Restoration Hardware. They're 9 inches in diameter and there will be 3 of them over my 12 foot long island. Still need to find something for over my kitchen sink ... >....See Morehobokenkitchen
