Can I see pics of microwave in your island? My pic included.
Comments (6)First, congrats on building your new house! Very exciting. My MW drawer isn't in our island so no picture, but in addition to the electrical question I'm wondering: It looks in your picture like the island counter has an overhang of several inches on all 4 sides (can't tell for sure) and a corbel in the center of each side. Where were you planning on placing the MW? Under the corbel? That seems awfully low. Or were you thinking of having 2 corbels on either side of the MW space? That would make sense to me so it could be higher, but you wouldn't want much overhang above it. So my preference would be sink side, centered between 2 corbels, with only a standard counter overhang. For an under-counter MW, I really like having a drawer, so you can place and retrieve items from above. (That's personal preference though.) natevalsmom - beautiful kitchen! Love your colors, lights, valances, and especially that island counter....See Morehelp needed asap...can you show me pics of your finished islands?
Comments (3)I don't have an island but I am happy to share some pictures of molding around the base of the island. If there is one below you prefer I can try to find more images or find others like it. Comments (7)lovestocook... I remember the pics of your kitchen because the cabinets are so unique and beautiful. Contemporary, clean, yet warm and inviting. Your hood suits your purposes perfectly! We went down to the house we're going to renovate and I took a look at the area again. Now I"m thinking of completely changing up the layout yet again so the hood won't be smack dab in the middle of the living area. Rather then try to explain... I"m going to take some pics of the exisitng mess (construction site and all) and post them for ideas. I'm still a work in progress when it comes to drawing layouts so I think some real time pics will help to start the process rolling a little better. If I do change it around, the hood would be infront of a huge 9' long window that has about 18" of space above it before the ceiling and the same amount of space below it before the floor. I guess that would make the window 5' high (DUH!... took me a minute to figure that out!) When I took a tape measure to a spot 30" above a standard height base cabinet I was surprised at how low that actually is. Since the area is going to be all open, I'm not yet sure if I want it in the siteline from family room straight through to the backyard. The backyard is what makes this house so glorious. Thank goodness this is a long term project and we are just beginning to begin. Thanks for taking the time to post pics....See MoreShow me pics of your SMALL kitchen island
Comments (14)Hi - my island is about as small as a rectangular island comes, and is in a small kitchen (12.5 x 14' I think). There are only 3 practical places to put it but they're pretty limiting as you can imagine. One is to turn it parallel with the long counter (that has the sink in it and two windows above); the other way is to make it appear to be coming out of the old furnace chimney (has the mushroom painting hanging on it) - almost like a built-in counter; and the final way is to do the latter only pull it out from the chimney a little to make its edges line up with other edges in the room (e.g. edge of stove or doorway to mudroom) to give it a feeling of more symmetry and make it more centered. Here are the pics - apologies for the dirty kitchen! The first one is of the island parallel to the long counter: (I'll be replacing the stainless top of the island w/ butcher block since our new counter will be stainless and I don't want to go overboard...that counter will have a white farm sink and gooseneck faucet BTW - I'm always defending it and trying to explain how it won't look too modern in its surroundings! ;) Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen island parallel w/ long countertop...See Morebbstx
