I have the yellow variegated form and have grown the common one in past. The variegated one is definitely slower in growth as well as in rooting cuttings, but its as easy as the common green one. I am yet to see the full leaf potential though, last tine it was around 2' when I chopped it.. another thing I noticed is that the internodes are longer in variegated form.. One of my friend grows the yellow variegated in open sun (5 hours direct sun) the yellow parts turn brown and dry up while the green portion of the leaf remains. Mine does the same thing but to a lesser extent as it is in partial sun (1 hour direct morning sun). Last year I chopped the main plant and took several cuttings, did nothing special... they all rooted and grew beautifully but it took 2 months for the cuttings to develop new leaves. By definition, all sports come from cuttings, sport is actually slang for bud sport, meaning the plant produced a new bud, shoot, eye, tuber, bulb...etc... That is morphologically different than the parent plant. The term seed sport is basically meaningless... They are simply just seeds that don't come true, there's any number of reasons a seed may not come true from the parent, usually it's considered a mutation. All plants are different! Were speaking in very general terms here, which really doesn't work well! Some plants, such as hostas throw sports regularly, others very seldom sport! Ive grown almost 100 cultivars of colocasia, producing literally thousands possibly tens of thousands of pups, asexual preproduction, and yet to find a single sport that occurred naturally, on the other hand, I've seen more sports than I can remember that were from tissue culture plants, these are known as somaclonal mutations. Aroids in tissue culture seem to have a disposition to do this more than most plants. The vast majority of genetic diversity comes from hybrids(which we're not discussing). Cross one amorph with another and plant out the seeds, you will likely end up with more than 2 distinct phenotypes, logic would tell you that one group will have dominate traits from the pollen parent, while the other group with show traits of the ovule parent. Pretty basic if it stopped there, but it doesn't! Often there will be a small number of plants that vary widely from either parent and each other seedling. These are often throwbacks to previous generations. This is why when you back cross, or self pollinate you still end up with multiple phenotypes. My konjacs have produced hundreds upon hundreds of pups, identical genetic copies of each other, again just like my many different colocasia, no diversity has been observed! Yet a single back cross, using genetically identical plants yielded over 100 seedlings, these seedlings were far from identical, in fact I created 4 groups of 8-20 plants each of similar looking plants, not identical but similar, but that still left over 20 seedlings that where quite different from all of the above... science is just scratching the surface of the genetic diversity contained within seeds, there's a school of thinking that believes that a seed may have the genes of EVERY parent plant, going back through every single generation of that plant, locked in it! The trick is getting these traits to express themselves! im not a botanist, atleast not formally educated in botany, everything I've said comes from my own experiences, what I've read, and numerous debates with other enthusiasts, I don't profess them to be fact, just my understanding of the situation. I don't have links ready off hand, but spending some time on Alan Galloways page at the NCS website, as well as Lariann Garners site, aroidiaresearch, contain some very interesting information on this subject, and directly related to aroids.

Timothy Sorry no variegation there. The color is a little uneven on the leaf.....probably something environmental caused that......but it is not variegated. Variegated sports do show up now and then, not often but sometimes people find them.

My adansonii is actually two seperate vines planted in the same pot. One vine has put out leaves with yellow lines on them (see first pic). I thought this could be mosaic virus, though the veins are still green and the leaves aren't deformed in any way other than the yellow markings. (Also, the shiny spots on the leaf are just due to some neem oil.) New leaves are still coming out, although slowly. The second vine has been fine up until now, and growing quickly (although smaller leaves than the yellowed vine). However, the last few leaves to pop out have now developed these raised yellowish spots, and have brown spots as well (see next two pics). Has the second vine caught mosaic virus from the first vine? Is it pest damage? (I haven't ever seen any pests on it though). I did fertilise 5 or 6 weeks ago, so could it be due to fertiliser burn? The yellow marks in the first pic were already there before I fertilised though, so I doubt this. Any other ideas..? After a tonne of googling I still can't any pictures online that look like the leaf in the first pic.
