Design Dilemma Home Decorating

rug under chairs or bed?

Hi everyone,

We have a converted attic space that we use as a guest room, office and extra living room. Wanting to add a nice rug to the space. Questions- should it go under the chairs or bed? If under the chairs- should it be round?

What a great space, such nice natural light!

It’s really just personal preference — for this particular room, I’d want a rug in the seating area and a small one beside the bed (for comfort and coziness).

But … if there’s enough room, I’d want a rug that would go under the bed, and a seating area rug, too. I can’t tell from the photos if they’d be too close together.

I’d do rectangular, not round. Showing this as shape/size example, not suggesting this rug:

Jinx, thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. I like the look of the rectangular rug under the chairs. Would a jute style look okay?
I don’t think we have enough space for a rug under the bed as well, so maybe a runner next to the bed instead?

I have to admit that I feel a bedroom is a good place to have wall to wall carpeting. It's just so much cozier, and I don't care what's in right now. Also, we don't have hardwood floors; what doesn't have wall to wall is tiled, but even if it were wood I'd have lots of area rugs. Since I had a spare Oriental rug I layered it on top of the carpet in the master, just to enjoy the color and pattern, since I'm definitely a "color" person.

The teal is the issue. You have antique blue for curtains. I would incorporate a pretty white/off-white rug that has some lovely antique blue detailing. I would find one with the Arabesque detail in the right blue and be done. The bed spread isn't showing very much colour from 10 ft. But your CURTAINS are working nicely as a 3rd colour. Go with that.

Lovely bedroom! I’d go a bit dramatic, and bring in some warmth for a luxe feel. Something with charcoal and/or black in it. I love mixing a traditional rug with glam and sleek. It’s a more timeless look. Jinx has great advice, and I love the look of jute, too, but seeing you may have littles in the house, it does have a rough texture to keep in mind in case they like to lounge on the floor. One of my children has an aversion to such texture, so just food for thought. You do have a lovely space, and a rug will ground it beautifully whatever you choose!

I could see something like this rug (wool and cotton) for a fun, modern look to suit your room. Comes in lots of sizes and you could add a matching runner at bedside. Be sure you have a good rug pad to prevent slippage.

Jennifer and alily- thanks so much for that input! That was a concern I had- love the look but fear it may be too rough for kids playing in the floor. Love the pottery barn suggestion- plan to go to a store to check them out. Thanks again!
